France is imposing curfews and Saturday demonstration bans after protests that saw 500,000 in the streets, 1,000 security personnel injured and 2,400 arrested.

The measures, reported by multiple outlets on October 22, mark an escalation. Prime Minister Lecornu has admitted the government “lost control” of the October 17 demonstrations, a rare concession that preceded the crackdown.

The curfews target the flashpoints: urban centres where the protests turned violent. Saturday bans aim to break the weekly rhythm that has sustained the movement. It is a government drawing lines, literally and figuratively.

The rebuke

The measures are a rebuke to the protest movement, but also a self-rebuke. Admitting lost control is an extraordinary statement from a sitting prime minister. Pakistan’s border crisis shows governments under pressure; France is showing the strain domestically.

For Macron, the stakes are the remainder of his presidency. A government that cannot keep order loses authority; a government that overreacts loses legitimacy. The curfews are the middle path, and a gamble.

What comes next

The protest movement has shown no sign of folding. If Saturday brings defiance of the bans, the government faces a choice: enforce or retreat. International coverage is tracking the tension, and the next 48 hours will tell.

Lines are drawn. Saturday will test them.
