Racial slur found in bathroom at Lynnfield High School

LYNNFIELD — A racial slur was found written on the bathroom stall door at Lynnfield High School on Thursday evening. Lynnfield Public School Superintendent Tom Geary issued an official statement detailing the incident and condemning “acts of racism and discrimination in all forms.”

“I want to be clear. The use of the N-word has a long and painful history rooted in anti-Black racism, dehumanization, and exclusion,” Geary wrote. “Its presence in our school community causes real harm. Regardless of the intent behind it, this language has no place in Lynnfield Public Schools.”

In his statement, which was also shared on the Town of Lynnfield’s official Facebook page, Geary specified that both school and district administrators “immediately” responded to the incident and that LPS is investigating the matter, which has also been documented and reported to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

The Lynnfield Police Department has also been notified and has initiated an investigation.

“As investigations proceed, appropriate consequences will be determined in accordance with district policies, student handbooks, and applicable laws,” Geary wrote. “While we cannot share confidential details regarding individual students or personnel matters, we will continue to communicate transparently about our response.”

Lynnfield Public Schools has continued to receive backlash for racist incidents and bullying at the middle school. Just last month, one father, Carl Allien, reiterated to the School Committee that his son was “subjected to at least three consecutive racial attacks,” and claimed he had yet to see any changes.

In response to the most recent incident, the Lynnfield Teachers’ Association released a statement saying that they are “outraged and deeply saddened” by the discovery of the racist slur.

“The fact that we are once again compelled to issue a public statement condemning racism in our schools should alarm every member of this community,” the LTA wrote.

In response to the incident, Geary said in his statement that Lynnfield High School will provide opportunities for students to “reflect on the impact of this incident, support one another, and reaffirm the values” expected of the school community. He also mentioned that on Wednesday night, LPS held a “School Community Night of Listening, Learning and Healing” event at Lynnfield Middle School.

“Last evening, many members of our community joined us to share their experiences, concerns, hopes, and expectations for how we create schools where every student feels safe, valued, respected, and a sense of belonging. One message that came through clearly is that our community expects us not only to listen, but to act. I heard that message,” Geary wrote.

On Friday, the Lynnfield School Committee, including Chair Kristen Elworthy, Vice Chair Brian Lambert, Kim Baker Donahue, Kate DePrizio, and Jim Dillon, released their own statement on Facebook, saying that “the district will continue to provide updates as the situation unfolds.”

“We want to say directly to our Black students, families, and community members: a slur written on a wall is not just vandalism,” they wrote. “It is a message aimed at making you feel unsafe and unwelcome in a school that belongs to you. That is intolerable, and we refuse to let it stand.”
