PEABODY — The West Lynn 12-year-old All-Stars remained undefeated in the District 16 tournament Tuesday night at Lt. Ross Park, thanks to a dominant pitching performance from Ben Naugle, who twirled a no-hitter in a 7-0 win.
Naugle struck out eight of the first nine East batters he faced, finishing with 14 strikeouts. He walked just two and allowed only one East baserunner.
Esfrailan Nivar (2-for-2, double, R) and Jaxson Gonzales (1-for-2, two RBIs, R) provided the firepower for West.
“With four days off, we were a little nervous about what it was going to look like, but these boys showed up ready to play,” West manager Rich Naugle said. “Ben was mixing speeds and trying to hit some corners. He knows the other team pretty well. He’s had some experience with them, so he just tried to change speeds and locate and go right at it, throwing strikes.”
“Our defense was great tonight, but it’s tough to win if you can’t hit. We had some challenges there,” East manager Tim Deihl said. “East versus West is always great because so many of the kids know each other. We’re happy for them that they got their second win.”
West set the tone early. Leadoff hitter Ben Naugle (1-for-3, R) jumped all over East starter Alan Urbaez’s (7 IP, 5 H, 2 K, 3 W, HBP) first pitch in the top of the first inning, lining a single to left. He scored on an infield groundout to East shortstop Yudiel Crispin, putting West on top, 1-0.
After Ben Naugle struck out the side on only 10 pitches in the bottom of the inning, West picked up where it left off in the top of the second. Mike Nardone (1-for-2, 2 R) and Jhon Lopez (0-for-1, R) led off with walks. Gonzales brought Nardone home with a single. Nick Foulds followed with a sacrifice fly to center fielder Erickel Lugo to make it 3-0. Gonzales came home on an infield groundout by Andruit Cardoza to extend the lead to 4-0.
West added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to seal the win. Nardone led off the fourth with a single, advanced to second and third on wild pitches and scored on a Gonzalez grounder back to Urbaez.
In the fifth, Wyatt Budwah (1-for-3, R) reached on an infield error and scored on a dropped third strike. Nivar scored the final run of the game. He drew a one-out walk and came around to score on a wild pitch.
Despite the loss, Deihl was pleased with East’s performance.
“It’s a really, really great group of kids,” Deihl said. “I’ve been coaching a long time and in terms of character and personality, the kids on the bench are the best. They play the right way and they have fun every time.”
East Lynn needs a win Wednesday night against the winner of Tuesday’s game between Peabody and Peabody West to avoid elimination.
West is back in action against Winthrop Friday at MacArthur Park in Peabody at 5:45 p.m.
“I don’t know much, but I know that they beat a traditionally good Peabody West team, so we are expecting a battle,” Naugle said. “We’re very much looking forward to it. We’ve had some good games against Lynn so far, so now we’re going to go outside of our city. We have a great group of kids. They’re dialed in and are excited about the tournament and everything that comes with it, so we’re fired up for it.”
