SAUGUS — It was lights, camera, action at Parcher Field in Saugus Tuesday night as Saugus TV premiered the first-ever Starlight Cinema night with “Jumanji” (1995).

The station created the event as a way to get families outside on a summer night with the community.

The night included popcorn, drinks, pizza, ice cream, games, temporary tattoos from Saugus Theatre Company, and more.

The event was made possible by a grant from the Saugus Cultural Council.

Sponsors for the event included Richard A. Kowalsky Insurance Agency, Inc., Eccentricity Media, Northeastern Fence, The Rubin Home Assisted Living, Soc’s Ice Cream, Lotus Nails Spa, Rockland Trust Bank, Tax Shop & Financial Center, 27str8 Apparel, The Moulaison Family, and Russo Painting.

Saugus TV’s Maureen Whitcomb said she had been surprised by the amount of sponsors they received, thanking them all. She said she hopes the night will start a tradition in town that can be continued.

“I’m hoping to do another one in October. … We’re hoping to have it at Stackpole Field or the Belmonte where it will be a little more accessible,” Whitcomb said.

She said the Department of Public Works had come by the field to bring barrels, check the field, and do some cleaning.

She said that Tiger Institute Tae Kwon Do had reached out to her, offering a birthday party as a raffle, leading Whitcomb to run out and grab raffle tickets to add to the event.

“I said ‘OK,’ and I went out and bought raffle tickets that night. It wasn’t something I had planned for, but I went out and grabbed the tickets for it,” she said.

Whitcomb also highlighted Cliftondale Pizza & Roast Beef, which stepped up when another vendor canceled.

“With this being the first one, it’s always the roughest for any of the sets that I’ve done. And that’s the trial. You see what works and what doesn’t work, and you figure it out from there,” Whitcomb said. “And I’d really like to see this carry on.”

As the clock hit 7:30 p.m., the film started rolling, with everyone taking their seats ready to enjoy.
