LYNNFIELD — The Summer Street School playground will officially reopen on Sept. 1 following major renovations aimed at making the space safer and more accessible for students.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony, open to the public, will begin at 3 p.m. at Summer Street School. The project marks the first major renovation of the playground in 21 years.

Before the renovations, the playground was not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and included broken and outdated equipment. It also did not adequately accommodate students in the school’s Differentiated Learning Program, which serves students with higher support needs, including those with sensory and mobility needs.

Beyond the school day, the playground serves children participating in Lynnfield Recreation’s summer camp program and families attending nearby youth sporting events.

The renovation was spearheaded by the Summer Street School PTO, led by President Sarah Kelley and Vice President Jenny Sheehan, with support from residents, businesses, community organizations, and state and local officials.

The PTO said its goal was to transform the playground into “an inclusive, safe, accessible playground serving hundreds of children, including preschoolers, kindergarteners, and students with significant sensory and mobility needs.”

In January, the PTO launched a fundraising campaign and reached its goal within four months, receiving contributions from more than 100 individual donors.

Major sponsors included Stacee L. Monkiewicz and Family, King & Wallin Family McDonald’s Restaurants, Townscape Lynnfield, Laurie and John Sheehan, Steve and Jenny Sheehan, and the Grieco, Flaherty, Kielt, Curtis, Kelley, and Sparkis families.

Local businesses and community organizations also contributed, including Eastern Bank, The Savings Bank, MarketStreet Lynnfield, A Healthy Lynnfield, Lynnfield Moms Group, Friends of Lynnfield Recreation, Lawnbright, Lynnfield Rotary, Scangas Construction, and Supino Insurance. The Crawford, Gallagher, Markey, Rotondi, and Sartorelli families also supported the project.

Sheehan previously said state Rep. Brad Jones secured $100,000 in state funding for the playground project. The PTO raised more than $100,000 in private contributions to supplement the state funding.
