Colin McGough to charge with the Rams

LYNN — Lynn Tech’s Colin McGough has found his next home as he recently committed to study and play football at Framingham State University. McGough, a multi-sport athlete, has wrapped up stellar football and track and field seasons.

“Academically, I think Framingham fits me perfectly and offers classes that I’m interested in,” he said. “Athletically, when I took my two tours, the coaches and the people were all very welcoming. I connected quickly with the football team, so after that, it was a no-brainer on the decision.”

Last fall, on the gridiron, McGough finished with 102 tackles (15 for losses). He will continue playing safety with the Rams.

“I’m looking forward to calling this place my second home. Meeting the team was great. It’s a whole different environment and very different from high school football,” said McGough, who also lined up as a receiver. “It’s going to be like a second job. I know I’ll fit in because I’m surrounded by people who want it just as bad as I do.”

Ahead of his freshman campaign, McGough knows he needs to put in work this offseason to get his body right.

“I want to improve my strength and my weight. I want to get bigger for the position that I’m going to play,” he said. “I’ve got people on the team who I’m going to need to fight for that spot. I also will be focusing on my footwork.”

Last week, McGough made Tech history by playing in the Shriners All-Star Football Classic. Better yet, he snagged an acrobatic interception.

“Playing in the Shriners game was a lot for me. I was the first guy in my school’s history to make it, so that put a lot of weight on my shoulders. I went into that game like I had a family to feed and I got the best outcome,” McGough said. “I enjoyed it because I was playing in a different environment. It’s not just Division 8 players there; it’s all the divisions, so I wanted to show the boys I can ball, too, and can hang with anyone.”

According to Tech football and track coach James Runner, McGough is the first player he’s had in 17 years to compete in both the Shriners and Agganis (June 28) All-Star games.

A moment that will stick with McGough was his first varsity start as a sophomore.

“The coaches might not have expected much from me since I’m a small guy, but Coach (Marcus) Taylor and Coach Runner believed in me and didn’t care about my size. They put me in and let me start,” McGough said. “The rest is history.”

McGough thanked his parents and coaches for helping him achieve his dream of playing college football.

“My parents (Vanthy Roeung and Patrick McGough) have played a big role in what I’m doing now. They helped me get to where I am by showing me unconditional love and guiding me the right way. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” McGough said. “As for my coaches, Coach Runner and Coach Taylor had a big role in my development, too. Whenever I wasn’t feeling the best, or down on myself, they were there to pick me up. I owe it to them, too.”
