Nahant library expands access through NOBLE

The Nahant Public Library has joined the North of Boston Library Exchange (NOBLE), granting library cardholders faster and more seamless access to books and other materials from neighboring libraries.

“Nahant hopes to be a part of a team,” said Nahant Public Library Director Nori Morganstein. “Joining NOBLE should not only connect the library to its sister libraries in nearby neighborhoods, but it will push Nahant forward with more accessibility, more community connections, and more assistance in a field that’s always changing and growing.”

The library’s NOBLE membership will connect residents to resources from 17 area public libraries, including those in Lynn, Swampscott, and Salem, as well as seven academic libraries and one special library. Nahant cardholders will also use a new online catalog to search for and reserve any of the 2.1 million books, movies, and other materials available from NOBLE libraries. In addition, the online catalog will provide access to the network’s 58,000 e-books, digital audiobooks, and digital magazines available through the Libby app and to digital materials available through the library’s Hoopla and Kanopy subscriptions.

The new system will also give Nahant residents the opportunity to browse collections, create personalized reading lists, and securely track their reading history.

“Joining NOBLE allows a library to meet its unique community needs while tapping into all of the resources of the larger system,” said NOBLE President Catherine McDonald, Director of the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library in Wakefield. “The professional camaraderie among our member libraries is invaluable. We grow stronger by learning from one another. It’s a joy to welcome Nahant to NOBLE.”

The Nahant Public Library, an essential public institution, strives to serve as an accessible and responsive information and literary center for all residents of the Nahant community and beyond. In a welcoming environment, with diverse materials, programs, and services, the library’s mission is to stimulate the imagination, nurture literacy, and promote cultural enrichment. The Nahant Public Library was founded in 1819, making it one of the oldest municipally-owned library collections in Massachusetts. The building opened in 1895 and was the first electrified building in Nahant.

NOBLE empowers libraries through collaboration and innovation. The North of Boston Library Exchange, Inc. is a cooperative effort of 26 area libraries founded more than 40 years ago to improve library service through technology and shared collections. The cooperative nature of NOBLE, coupled with significant grant funding, provides technology, services, and resources that would be far out of reach for a single library operating on its own.
