State tournament roundup: Upset alert (x2)

You could say a star player not only brings his or her game to the postseason, but elevates it.

That’s exactly what Marblehead’s Zoe Dwyer and Peabody’s Leah Bresnahan did Tuesday, scoring six goals apiece to lead their respective girls lacrosse teams to Div. 2 upset wins.

The No. 33 Magicians hit the road and defeated No. 32 Tantasqua Regional, 15-12. Ella McConnell added a hat trick and two assists, joined offensively by Addie Co Peeps (2 goals, 2 assists), Emma Ryan (2 goals, assist), and Maggie Svencer (goal, 3 assists).

“Great team win,” said Marblehead coach Annie Madden, whose group led just 6-5 at halftime. “We played with pressure, adjusted to their defense, and continued to play our game — putting all of the pieces together from a season of learning on the fly. We couldn’t be more proud of today’s performance.”

The Tanners, ranked 36th, spoiled No. 29 North Attleborough’s home game beneath the lights, 15-5. Arianna Alvarado (4 goals), do-it-all Victoria Vaz (3 goals, 5 assists), and Sophia Galbiati (2 goals) did offensive damage, while Eleni Spack made a dozen saves between the pipes.

“Sydney Angland and Leah Ruffing had an outstanding defensive game with interceptions and caused turnovers,” said Peabody coach Jessica Upton.

Both teams advanced to the Round of 32.

GIRLS TENNIS

No. 14 Marblehead 4
No. 19 Nauset 1

Marblehead punched its ticket to the Div. 2 Round of 16 behind a pair of doubles wins from Harper Mooney/Lilly O’Keefe and Joy Meshulam/Caroline Bruett. Samara Dosch cruised at first singles, while freshman Sophie Li escaped a close one at third singles.

“This match was as good as high school tennis gets,” said Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman. “All season, I have been emphasizing to the girls the importance of securing a home match for the first round of our playoffs and, today, the home crowd did not disappoint. We had tons of hometown support, including some alumni, which I think really rubbed off on the team. They were full of positive energy that they transferred onto the courts. Every position played some great tennis. I’m excited to see what we can do in the tournament as the week goes on.”

BOYS TENNIS

No. 6 Masconomet 5
No. 27 St. Mary’s 0

In Div. 2 action, St. Mary’s (12-7) season came to an end after the Spartans were swept by the Chieftains. Masconomet will play the winner of Friday’s match between No. 11 Northampton and No. 22 Marshfield (4 p.m.).
