State tournament roundup: Spartans march on

You could say good teams don’t run. They respond.

Early deficits were no problem for the top-ranked St. Mary’s baseball team, which climbed out of 2-0 and 3-2 holes to defeat No. 32 Dartmouth, 9-4, at Fraser Field. The Spartans (18-3) advanced to the Div. 2 Round of 16 against No. 16 Westwood (TBD).

A three-run fifth inning put St. Mary’s ahead, 5-3. The hosts plated seven runs across the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

Doing offensive damage were Rolky Brea Arias (2 H, 2 R), Michael DeMaino (H, 3 RBI), Kalen Huddle (H, RBI), Jacob Peterson (H, RBI), Nate Cutone (H, R), and Jackson Finn (H, RBI, R).

Brennan Malloy (5 IP, 8 H, 3 R, BB, 3 K) got the start for St. Mary’s, which totaled seven hits and six walks at the plate. The Spartans only struck out once.

BASEBALL

No. 22 Danvers 4
No. 11 Swampscott 2

In Div. 3 action, Danvers (11-11) scored three runs (2 unearned) in the seventh inning to upset Swampscott (16-5) at Frank DeFelice Diamond. The Big Blue had runners on second and third base during the seventh, but left them stranded.

Swampscott took a 2-0 cushion into the fifth inning after RBI from Caden Ross and Isaiah Baires. Jamison Ford (7 IP, 2 ER, 10 K) pitched a strong game, according to coach Joe Caponigro.

BOYS LACROSSE

No. 7 Weston 11
No. 26 Swampscott 6

The Big Blue bowed out of the Div. 3 tournament with a final record of 10-10. Weston will host No. 10 Oakmont Regional in the Round of 16 (TBD).

GIRLS TENNIS

No. 3 Lynnfield 5
No. 19 Saint John Paul II 0

Lynnfield’s (18-2) Lily Alves, Kathleen Brown, and Olivia Asaad recorded singles wins, while the doubles pairings of Christine Choi/Vicky McCrann and Emma Wagon/Charlotte Beccia took care of business in Div. 3 play.
