State tournament roundup: Roads end for Marblehead girls tennis, boys lacrosse

Two Marblehead teams fought hard Wednesday, but in the end, their magic ran out.

A 5-0 loss against No. 3 Duxbury marked the end of a strong girls tennis season for the No. 14 Magicians. They bowed out with a record of 12-7, while Duxbury improved to 18-2.

In the Div. 2 Round of 16, Sami Dosch, Callie Gilmore, and Sophie Li lost in straight sets. The doubles teams of Joy Meshulam/Caroline Bruett and Harper Mooney/Lilly O’Keefe also fell.

“Duxbury showed us why they’re the No. 3 seed in the tournament today. They have a strong lineup from top to bottom,” said Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman. “Our girls should be proud of all they accomplished this year as a team, winning the (Northeastern Conference) Dunn (Division) and our first playoff match. I’m really proud of them all. I’ll especially miss the seniors, who provided unbelievable leadership all season.”

Marblehead’s boys lacrosse team, ranked 20th in Div. 2, was also in action. The Red and Black nearly upset No. 4 Mansfield, but fell, 8-6, in the Round of 16.

The laxmen finished with a record of 14-6 and won the Dunn Division. John Wilkens was named NEC Coach of the Year.

Maya Oliva batted 3-for-3 for St. Mary’s, which overcame a 2-0 deficit and survived. Abbey Sousa did a little bit of everything with two hits, two RBI, and a run scored, while pitcher Aliza Crean-Oviedo (4 H, 2 ER, 7 K) went the distance.

St. Mary’s (18-4) plated two runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings. Next is Saturday’s Div. 3 Round-of-8 showdown against top-seeded Dighton-Rehoboth (19-3) at 4 p.m.

No. 3 Nashoba Regional 14
No. 6 St. Mary’s 11

The most successful season in program history for St. Mary’s (16-3) ended after Wednesday’s Div. 3 Round-of-8 tilt. Despite 11 goals scored, the Spartans, in enemy territory, struggled to contain Nashoba’s high-powered offense.
