Scooter ride ends at Nahant Police Station

NAHANT — Two men with violent criminal backgrounds were arrested Wednesday after evading police on electric scooters, according to a statement from police officials.

Nahant Police responded to a call of two individuals driving recklessly in the area between 40 Steps on Nahant Beach and Pleasant Street near Nahant Road at approximately 3:10 p.m., according to Nahant Police Logs.

Police arrested Juan Alejandro Nazario, 24, of Vernon Street, Hyde Park, on charges of resisting arrest, possessing a stolen vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, negligent and unsafe operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, speed exceeding the posted limit, failure to drive in the right lane, and failure to stop or yield.

Nazario evaded one of Nahant’s police cruisers on Nahant Road. He turned around and went back up Nahant Road northbound. Shortly after, he was tased and taken into custody, Officials said.

Massachusetts State Police K-9 Units also responded to assist. The Lynn Fire Department was also dispatched for an ambulance response.

Jaylen Amani Speed, 25, of Crawford Street, Dorchester, was also arrested on charges of stolen vehicle possession, failure to stop for police, negligent and unsafe operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop or yield, failure to drive in the right lane, a helmet violation, and speed exceeding the posted limit.

Police Chief Timothy M. Furlong said in a statement that the Massachusetts State Police were able to ping the location of Speed using his ankle bracelet.

The two electric scooters, a black 2025 Jog 150 and a black 2026 Angel 3 operated by the men, were previously reported stolen from the Boston area.

Furlong said the scooter makes could not be identified.

In a statement posted to the Nahant Police Department’s Facebook page, officials said fleeing from officers was “not the best decision for a Town with only one egress and him having no knowledge of the layout of our little town.”

The statement also said rumors circulating that Speed and Nazario were attempting to break into a home were false.

Furlong said in the statement, “I would like to personally thank the men and women of the Nahant Police Department for their tireless efforts in keeping this town safe. Sergeant Leary and Officer Hoffman were on shift and handled the incident flawlessly. We also had officers respond from their backyards (literally), their homes, and on their way back from training to assist in the search efforts. We have limited resources and often rely on off-duty officers and outside agencies. I would also like to thank the Massachusetts State Police.”
