LYNN — Challenging, fun, adventurous, scenic, beautiful — these are just some of the words used by runners who participated in the most recent Lynn Woods races.
With the worry of 90-degree temperatures and smoke filling the air from the Canadian fires, would anyone show up for the race?
Yes, and those who did were in for a treat.
Thirty-nine runners took on the 5.2-mile long course that had a nice mix of single track and fire roads. Rafael Villatoro, of Lynn, who runs between 60-65 miles a week, loved the downhill section of the course. This week, like others, he secured the top spot. It’s all great training for the Beantown Marathon in September that he plans to run. Villatoro’s time was a speedy 32:49. Second place belonged to Tommy Fogarty of Peabody (35:11), followed by Erich O’Neil of Beverly (35:30).
The top female runner, Jessica Snyder, of Woburn, loved the rocky single track. Running up to 40-50 miles a week to train for an upcoming ultra in France, Snyder keeps returning to Lynn Woods because she loves the trails and said the community is awesome. Snyder’s time was 39:15. Salem’s Caela Hall and Manchester’s Giulia Bussone crossed the line together with a time of 46:01.
Forty runners enjoyed a unique experience during the 2.5-mile short course. Participants got to cross over the “land bridge” which, built in 1902, separates Walden Pond from Glen Lewis Pond. Submerged during wetter months, this bridge isn’t often seen by hikers or runners. When the water is low, people can walk directly between the two ponds. The top three runners were Rich Whitcomb of Lynnfield (20:05), as well as Lynn’s Gianni Edmundes (20:11) and Brandon Sok (20:50). In seventh place — and first among females — was Lynn’s Siena Rose Summa with a time of 22:28. Felicia Sciortino, of Somerville, ran 23:14 and Lynn’s Evelyn Perez ran 24:25.
Twenty-two runners took on the one-mile kids race. Twelve-year-old Mya Eichel led the pack with a time of 7:35. Brynn Lunt, 11, was the second female with a time of 7:50. Sixteen-year-old Astrid Reyes took third with a time of 9:04. Marblehead’s Isaac Goulter, 10, was first for the males running 7:38. Placing second and third, respectively, were Simon Curcuru (9:22) and Boden Rouse (11:15).
Next week, short-course runners will enjoy Tracy Trail, while long-course runners will take on the infamous “I Hate the Dam” run.
