The Lynn English and Lynn Classical softball teams took care of business Friday evening.

A battle between nearby foes saw English defeat Lynn Tech 19-7. English’s Annika Johansson played well in the circle, striking out five batters and allowing just two walks across four innings. Tech’s Aleena Acosta struck out nine batters.

English compiled 16 walks, stole 30 bases, and committed no errors. Armely Mateo, Rashely Castillo, Lacey Marshall, and Jianny Bernabel collected hits, while Ashley Morillo and Arlette Castillo chipped in RBI for the Bulldogs.

As for the Tigers, Acosta (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 R) helped her own cause and Joslyn Wise “made a great catch in right field,” according to Tech coach Beth Mercaldi.

Classical (10-3) clipped Melrose 9-3 for its sixth consecutive win, punching the Rams’ state tournament ticket.

Coach Joe Morin’s group delivered six runs in the sixth inning. Leading the way were Emma Chevalier (2-for-3, 2 RBI, R), Brooke Braswell (2-for-3, 2 R), Olivia Rodriguez (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 R), and Aysia Olaes (7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER).

“Great team win. We have a tough lineup — one through nine — to keep off the scoreboard and we were able to put it together late,” Morin said. “Melrose did a great job putting the ball in play, only striking out once, but we played outstanding defensively.”

Saugus (7-7) received hits from Ari Chianca, Sydney Deleidi, Aubrey DeMonte (RBI), Layla DeMonte (2 RBI), and Alannah Duong, while eighth grader Jenna O’Donnell pitched well in relief, according to coach Steve Almquist.

“It just wasn’t our day and they’re a good team,” Almquist said of the Falcons. “Credit to them.”

Despite home runs from Abbey Sousa and Sydney Wells, the Spartans (10-3) dropped Friday’s tilt. They fought until the end after an 11-1 deficit.

EJ Wyman led Marblehead with three hits and Collin Allen (5 2/3 IP, 3 ER) played well on the mound, but the Magicians couldn’t capitalize on early opportunities and fell to 8-7.

Danvers walked off as Saugus’ comeback attempt fell short. Nathan Soroko (2 H) smashed a home run to left field, while Chris Mazin recorded a pair of hits for the Sachems.

Make it seven consecutive wins for Marblehead, which received singles wins from Samara Dosch, Callie Gilmore, and Sophie Li. The doubles teams of Emily Levine/Annie Tucker and Carolyn Black/Gabby M also took care of business.

“Today was a solid win against Salem. They are an improved team with a new coach,” said Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman. “Going forward, we are gearing up for some tough matches as the season winds down. Newburyport, Swampscott, Lynnfield, and Winchester will be good tests for us.”
