LYNN — The Revere Patriots (1-0-1) stormed onto Manning Field and walked away with a 7-0 victory against the Lynn English Bulldogs (0-3).

Tuesday’s opening five minutes saw English controlling possession in Revere’s half, but once the Patriots settled in, they dominated time of possession.

Revere kept letting shots fly. English goalie Adriana Martinez Zepeda made save after save to keep the Bulldogs level.

“She’s an awesome kid. She’s traditionally a softball kid, but she got talked into playing by her friends. She played when she was younger, but never in high school,” said English coach Peter Pappagianopoulos. “She hustles and battles at every practice, trying to make up for 10 years of goalie experience in 10 days. If nothing else, she will always give 100 percent effort — even if she doesn’t have the best positioning.”

Despite Zepeda’s brilliance between the pipes, Revere’s Emily Torres (4 goals) kicked off the scoring in the 15th minute. Torres lined up a shot from range and it went past the outstretched fingers of Zepeda. The goal came from more than 35 yards out.

“Emily is one of our captains and has been on the team all four years,” said Revere coach Ariana Rivera. “I’d like to say she’s humble, but she definitely brings a lot to the team. She’s one of our top goal-scorers and generates a lot of offense for us.” 

Moments later, Torres doubled up for her second goal of the half.

Seven minutes into the second half, the referee called a foul in the box, giving Revere a penalty kick. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, the penalty was missed.

After the hosts sustained pressure and looked like they were going to find a breakthrough, Revere went on a counterattack that led to Sofia Correa Muriel scoring the third goal.

“She’s one of our captains, as a freshman, and I think that’s pretty impressive of her,” Rivera said. “She’s very vocal and a great playmaker. She helps out our wingers a lot and generates a lot of offense.”

A defensive highlight from English came when a Revere forward shot a curling effort that was goal-bound. Jesselly Ampudia Robles leaped up and headed the shot off-line.

In the 68th minute, Muriel netted her brace, followed by Amy Lopez scoring Revere’s fifth goal off the crossbar and in.

Despite the loss, Pappagianopoulos was proud of his team’s effort.

“They battled really hard in the first half. The injury bug hit us hard, so we have attackers on defense. Toward the start of the second half, we allowed those attackers to get forward and we started to look good, but they hit us on a counterattack,” he said. “Their first two goals came from outside of the 18 (yard line). We’ll live with that. We’re too young of a team to be playing tight in that area. I was proud of the effort all around the field.” 

English looks to bounce back on Thursday when it hosts Gloucester at 6 p.m. Revere is back in action on Friday when the Patriots welcome Lynn Classical at 4:15 p.m.
