PEABODY — City councilors are calling for a closer look at traffic safety and bike path maintenance across Peabody.

Following concerns raised by Bartholomew Street residents last month, Ward 1 Councilor Craig Welton made a motion during the latest City Council meeting to schedule a Municipal Safety Committee meeting to discuss the issues, with Police Capt. Scott Richards present.

“I had a number of constituents reach out about some travel safety issues on Bartholomew Street,” Welton told the Council. “I think all of us know that there’s been ongoing challenges with how narrow the street is in certain areas, and speeding, and a bunch of different things.”

Welton said the meeting will “discuss possible traffic safety mitigation measures for Bartholomew Street and also the Bartholomew Street and Lynn Street intersection.” His motion was unanimously approved.

Residents previously pointed to speeding and motor-vehicle accidents along the narrow road, which is frequently used as a shortcut between Lynnfield and Lynn streets.

Bartholomew Street resident Paul Campbell welcomed the upcoming discussion.

“I think it’s great. … I’d love to go,” he said.

Campbell hopes officials will consider adding a three-way stop and crosswalk near his home, where he said three bus stops are located. He also wants officials to clarify the road’s speed limit, as signs along the street display different limits.

The Municipal Safety Committee meeting to discuss Bartholomew Street has not yet been scheduled.

Additionally, Councilor-at-Large Tom Rossignoll made a motion that Mayor Ted Bettencourt, Department of Public Services Director Will Paulitz, and Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department Director Jackie Ciardi “do a full assessment of all our bike paths and establish a maintenance plan.”

“I was at the last Community Preservation Committee meeting, and what’s happening is the Community Preservation [Committee] is approving all of these bike paths, but the ones that have been established way back in the beginning, their maintenance, I would say, is subpar,” Rossignoll said.
