MARBLEHEAD — A Marblehead attorney’s firm has taken the initiative to promote children’s safety on wheels. 

Around 125 bicycle helmets were donated to Bates Elementary School in Salem last Friday by Marblehead resident Robert Mazow’s personal injury firm, Mazow McCullough, PC, as National Bicycle Safety Month comes to an end. 

“We’re proud to continue partnering with Bates Elementary to help promote bicycle safety and provide helmets to local students,” Mazow said. “Supporting families and investing in the safety of children in our community is deeply important to all of us at Mazow McCullough.” 

The personal injury firm has donated bicycle helmets to Bates Elementary School for more than four years, in an attempt to minimize the amount of bicycle-related accidents and “to teach young kids the importance of wearing a helmet, so they can protect the most important part of their body,” said Mazow.  

For more than two decades, Mazow McCullough, PC has aided Massachusetts and other New England communities in high-stakes, client-centered cases. The firm resolves, “unfortunately, more [bicycle accidents] than we want,” Mazow said. 

In Massachusetts, as of June 2, bicycle accidents accounted for 328 out of the reported 10,000 accidents since January 2026, according to the MassDOT Crash Data Portal.

On average, only 14 to 17% of children involved in bicycle-related accidents wear helmets, according to an American Academy of Pediatrics study on helmet use among elementary students. 

Sue Faria Smith, principal of Bates Elementary School, extended her gratitude to Mazow McCullough, PC on behalf of third- and fourth-grade students receiving helmets. 

“Safety is always our top priority at school, making this a particularly meaningful gift that reinforces the importance of staying safe both in and out of the classroom,” Faria Smith said. “We are grateful knowing that our student bike riders will be safer because of this thoughtful and generous donation.”
