SWAMPSCOTT — A 59-year-old man died Monday morning after an incident in the parking lot of Stop & Shop on Paradise Road, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.

Swampscott Police responded to the parking lot at 450 Paradise Road, where officers conducted a well-being check on the occupant of a vehicle. The District Attorney’s office said the man, who was alone in the vehicle, stabbed himself in the torso with a knife.

A person who was at the scene told The Daily Item that the man received CPR at the scene.

The man was taken to Salem Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the District Attorney’s office. His identity is being withheld at this time. Officials said he was known to have lived in Swampscott and, more recently, Florida.

Swampscott Police said there is no danger or threat to public safety and confirmed that an active investigation is underway. The department is working with the Essex County District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police.

“Because of the highly sensitive and personal nature of this situation, we must respect the rights and privacy of the individual(s) involved,” Swampscott Police said in a statement Monday.

Police referred additional questions about the incident to the District Attorney’s Office.
