LYNN — Children wove through cones, tested their riding skills and cooled off with frozen treats Friday morning as the Lynn Police Department hosted its annual Bike Safety Day at Manning Field, combining summer fun with lessons designed to keep young cyclists safe.

The event, part of the department’s Youth Services programming, gave families the opportunity to learn proper bicycle safety while taking part in hands-on activities and giveaways.

Through a state bicycle safety traffic grant, the department distributed 100 free bicycle helmets to children. Officers and volunteers also conducted on-site bike inspections and fittings, helping families with basic safety checks and minor repairs before riders hit the road.

Despite the warm temperatures, attendees found relief at the department’s Copcicle truck between laps around a bicycle safety course led by the department’s bike unit.

Children and their families also visited a helmet-fitting station, where officers ensured each helmet was properly adjusted, and an English- and Spanish-language safety education booth that offered information on bicycle laws, visibility, and safely sharing the road with motorists.

The event included several giveaways and six bicycle raffles. Three bicycles were donated, and three were purchased for the event through contributions from the Lynn Police Department, the Lynn Police Health and Fitness Club, and the Lynn Police Union.

Lynn Police School Security and Emergency Planning Liaison John Mackin said the program is designed to help children develop safe riding habits during the summer months, when many spend more time on their bikes.

“It’s mostly just because a lot of kids ride their bikes in the summer, so we want to introduce them to bike safety and have them know what’s right and what’s wrong to do, and you have to be careful with cars and things like that, so that there are no unnecessary accidents that take place,” Mackin said.
