LYNN — When Lynn Classical and Lynn English meet, records go out the window as each team knows it’s going to get the other’s best shot. Wednesday’s game went down to the wire as Classical escaped with a 3-2 win that not only gave the Rams bragging rights over the Bulldogs, but clinched the Greater Boston League title. 

English didn’t make it easy. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead and were three outs from a win. 

However, Classical had other plans.

“The message was that we haven’t had a last-inning comeback this year and that’s what we wanted. We also had the opportunity to win the GBL,” said Classical coach Jason Rogato. “If you want to do it, now is the time.”

Classical’s Emerson Lara led off the seventh inning with a single. He advanced to third after a bunt from Braeden Ohannesian and a passed ball. From there, Lara tied the game after another passed ball. 

“I told him that we didn’t need a triple or a double; we just needed him to get on base and that’s what he did,” Rogato said. “We knew our guys behind him would be able to get him home. That at-bat was huge.” 

With two outs, Jayden Barragan (3-for-4, RBI, 1B, 2B, 3B) met the moment and delivered an RBI single to drive home Ohannesian (3-2).

“He was dialed in today with a three-hit game,” Rogato said. “My confidence in him was high — not just because of his game today. He’s been that guy all year, especially the last two games, and he’s been on fire. For him to come up with two outs and deliver was huge.” 

The Rams turned to Mark Walsh on the mound, who delivered a 1-2-3 inning to earn the save. 

“We did our best to win the game, but things didn’t go our way the last few innings,” said English coach Esteban Paula. “If we would have won that game, we would have had a chance to still make the playoffs.” 

English’s Josue Prandy pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up three runs (2 ER) while striking out eight batters. At the plate, Prandy batted 1-for-2 with a two-run single down the third-base line to give English a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. 

“Josue did an unbelievable job today. On Monday, he asked me for the ball. He wanted to pitch this game. He did a great job,” Paula said. “It was tough for him to lose after putting out a great performance like he did. All around, he did a great job today.” 

Prior to the game, Classical honored seniors Yunier Moreno and Jake Desmondo. Moreno (2 K) got the start and pitched two innings, while Desmondo batted 1-for-2 with a double.

Both teams will take part in the Doug Mullins Memorial Baseball Tournament with Classical hosting Swampscott at 4 p.m. Friday before English takes on St. Mary’s at 7 p.m. All games will be played at Fraser Field.
