To the editor:

I would like to provide additional context regarding a recent Daily Item article that referenced the possibility of a 300-400% increase in local water rates. I recognize that this headline created understandable concern, and I want to ensure that Peabody residents have accurate information.

The figures referenced in the article were presented by representatives of the South Essex Sewerage District (SESD) during a recent City Council meeting. The SESD is an independent regional entity that manages wastewater disposal for Peabody, Salem, Danvers, Beverly, and Marblehead. Their presentation outlined long-term infrastructure projects that may be necessary over the next five to 20 years. These very early estimates represent projected costs across all five communities and would require significant review, discussion, and refinement.

No votes were taken at the meeting, and no decisions have been made. Any future projects proposed by the SESD would be shared among all member communities, and each community would be responsible only for its portion. As the SESD continues its presentations in the other cities it serves, we expect extensive review at both the local and state levels before any plans move forward.
