MARBLEHEAD — For the majority of schools, their track seasons are over, but not Marblehead High. Four standout distance runners will fly to Eugene, Oregon to compete in next week’s Nike Nationals.
Sarah Munroe, Eleanor Morgan, Marietta O’Connell, and Norah Walsh will represent the Red and Black one more time as they compete against the best in the country. The four will compete in the 4×1-mile and 4x800m, while O’Connell will also compete individually in the 2,000m steeplechase.
Although Marblehead coach Will Herlihy has sent runners to Nationals before, he’s never had a relay team qualify.
“I’ve been super lucky that I’ve had a few athletes in the past go out and qualify to compete, but I’ve never had a relay like this — especially one so challenging in the 4×1-mile,” Herlihy said. “To think we have four milers at this school that all are running as fast as they are is insane. It’s all a credit to them and how they work together and lift each other up.”
Herlihy doesn’t think he’s ever had more than two athletes run under-six-minute miles at a time. This year, he has three under 5:30, four under 5:35, and another under 5:40.
What’s unique about this relay team is that it consists of a freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. Herlihy believes it all starts with O’Connell, a senior, and the precedent she has set.
“It’s fantastic for our senior, Marri, who has worked so hard to train herself, but also to build this team and lift up her teammates in her four years,” Herlihy said. “Now, we’re seeing the work that she has put in and the model that she set. The example she set is being followed by these girls.”
Entering the season, Herlihy knew his group had potential, but wasn’t sure if it would have enough to qualify for Nationals.
“I knew coming in that Marri has been excellent all four years. Sarah Munroe started to run distance as a sophomore, but had a great spring last year. Norah Walsh, who is not too far off from Sarah, has worked so hard since last spring — especially this fall,” he said. “Then, I also knew Eleanor Morgan as I followed her middle school career. I was a little bummed when she didn’t do cross country this fall, but I knew she had a lot of potential. She ran a 5:50 mile in middle school, so I knew there was something special there, too. Looking at their times at the start of the season, I wasn’t sure if it would be enough to hit the national standard, but they blew those expectations out of the water.”
The 4×1-mile is set for Friday, June 19, with the 4x800m the following afternoon. O’Connell’s individual race is Friday afternoon.
“They don’t think they’re special, but not a lot of teams qualify for this. I want them to keep in mind that this is an incredibly special opportunity that they fully deserve and earned,” Herlihy said. “They are so much better than, sometimes, they let themselves realize. I want them to enjoy it. I hope they cherish this opportunity and experience. Hayward Field (at the University of Oregon) is one of the most famous tracks in the world. You don’t know if you’re going to get back. We’ll try, but you never know.”
