Antique cars bring smiles to Peabody seniors

PEABODY — Alliance Health at Rosewood, located at 22 Johnson St., held its fourth annual Classic Car Show Fundraiser on Wednesday, bringing together its residents, their families and friends, and antique car owners for an afternoon of sunshine, music, and philanthropy.

The event featured 11 antique cars, including a 1931 Ford Model A, a 1955 Chevrolet Belair, a 2001 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe, and more. There was also a barbecue lunch available, raffles to bid on, and a DJ playing blasts from the past.

“The residents really love it,” Rosewood Executive Director Stephanie Bruno said. “It gets a lot of the folks outside who don’t typically like to come outside or participate in bigger groups because it’s very nostalgic for them. It’s really awesome to see them light up and tell us about when they had these cars.”

John Guarneri, who drove his 1961 Chrysler 300G down from New Hampshire, said he participated in this car show simply for the enjoyment of visiting with the senior citizens. Mike Luck, a Peabody resident with a 1964 Chevrolet Malibu SS, added that it’s quite neat that this event can transport memory care residents back in time, prompting stories about first cars and younger days.

Besides creating an enjoyable atmosphere for the Rosewood residents, the purpose of the car show was to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association, as June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, and the Rosewood Residence Fund. Proceeds will be split evenly.

Maria Stephanou, director of the Northeastern MA Walk to End Alzheimer’s, said she felt “really grateful” that Rosewood was fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Association.

“My favorite part of my job is that I get to go out into the community and spend time with the teams who are really trying to make a difference in the fight to end Alzheimer’s, so I love doing things like this where I can see the families that it’s affecting and also the teams that are trying to ease that burden,” Stephanou said.

The Rosewood Residence Fund allows the residents to go on excursions and is a way to provide extra experiences that the assisted living home’s budget does not account for. Bruno said an example of what those funds have gone toward is Rosewood’s fully stocked bar, which residents requested so they can have happy hours.

“This is our biggest moneymaker of the year,” Bruno said.

Last year, $2,500 was raised. A final tally of Wednesday’s event is not yet available, but Bruno noted that $1,600 was raised prior to the event.

In addition to raising money and enjoying a sunny day outdoors, there was a vote taken for the attendees’ favorite cars.

Wes Graves took first with his classic cream-colored 1959 Chevrolet Impala Convertible; Stan Vandernoot took second with his candy apple red 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe.
