Fire breaks out in Saugus home

A 2-alarm fire broke out on Atherton Street in Saugus Saturday morning, drawing firefighters from Revere, Lynn, Melrose, Stoneham, and Wakefield to the scene to aid in knocking down the blaze.

The fire was reported around 10:50 a.m. Saturday at 8 Atherton St. and a second alarm was struck shortly after reports of the blaze first emerged, according to the union representing the town’s firefighters. Heavy smoke poured out of the attic of the 2 ½-story home, with firefighters venting the roof during the response.

At the scene, firefighters could be seen repeatedly entering and exiting the home, with much of the focus on the attic area. Videos posted to social media show firefighters spraying water onto the back of the home, and it appears most of the damage was contained to the upper level of the building, where smoke was visible.

No flames were visible at the scene by around 11:20 a.m., and firefighters appeared to be concluding their operations by 11:45 a.m. Saturday. Atherton Street was blocked off while firefighters worked to knock down the fire. The home is situated in east Saugus, near the border with Lynn.

It was not clear Sunday if anyone was injured in the blaze, how many people were displaced, or what caused the fire.

A dispatcher at the Saugus Public Safety Building said nobody at the fire department could speak to an Item reporter Sunday. Messages left with Chief Michael Newbury’s office were not returned.
