LYNN — Kevin Brown was 14 when a bicycle ride with friends nearly ended his life — and gave him a story he would later tell through music.

Brown, a Boston native raised in Lynn who performs under the name Kay B, said he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle. He remembers seeing a white light moments before the collision and waking to find the bicycle shattered beneath him, glass embedded in his face, and his best friend fearing he was dead.

Despite the force of the crash, Brown said hospital scans revealed only minor injuries. He was discharged that night.

One comment from an emergency responder remained with him: “He will live years to come to tell the story.”

Brown is now telling it through hip-hop, drawing on his experiences with street life, survival, and perseverance as he builds an independent music career connected to the city that raised him.

“Everything I went through became part of my story,” Brown said. “Music gives me a way to turn those experiences into something people can connect with. I want somebody listening to know that whatever they’re going through doesn’t have to be the end of their story.”

Those themes form the basis of “781side,” a developing musical project inspired by Lynn and the surrounding area code. Through it, Brown explores ambition, loyalty, family, hope, and the decisions that can shape a person’s future.

Brown has toured, attended BET-related red-carpet events, and connected with artists and others in the entertainment industry while working to expand his audience. He recently closed a show after New York rapper Kyle Richh performed, another step forward in a career Brown has largely pursued on his own.

Still, he said his ambitions extend beyond gaining attention or landing larger performances. Brown hopes his work can encourage people facing difficult circumstances and demonstrate to younger artists in Lynn that where they begin does not have to dictate where they end up.

“I’m representing where I come from, but I’m also trying to show what can come from it,” Brown said. “Sometimes the hardest moments in your life are the moments that give you a reason to keep going.”

As he continues releasing music and developing “781side,” Brown also hopes to draw greater attention to other independent artists emerging from Lynn. His own contribution begins with the crash he survived as a teenager and the second chance he believes it gave him.
