Lynn students row, row, row their boat

LYNN — Physical education students in the eighth-grade Discovery Program Physical Education classes at Lynn Vocational Technical Institute (LVTI) participated in an on-the-water rowing experience Thursday at Sluice Pond as part of a partnership with the North Shore Maritime Center (NSMC).

This is the second year of the program, which began after North Shore Maritime Center’s William Goldenheim reached out to Lynn Public Schools about bringing rowing opportunities to students. Since then, the partnership has continued to grow, providing students with a unique opportunity to learn the sport of rowing both in the classroom and on the water.

The North Shore Maritime Center has provided 19 rowing ergometers (ergs), which are housed at Lynn Vocational Technical Institute and used throughout the school year. Students have participated in a structured indoor rowing curriculum using the ergs, learning rowing technique, terminology, teamwork, race starts, power application, and rowing in unison before taking their skills to the water.

The rowing program has been made possible through the collaboration of North Shore Maritime Center, rowing instructor Donna Weiner, and LPS physical education teacher Beth Marrie.

Thursday’s field trip served as the culmination of the program, allowing students to practice what they have learned on the ergs while experiencing rowing on Sluice Pond under the guidance of experienced rowing instructors.
