State tournament roundup: Lynnfield falls short in softball action

An up-and-down season for Lynnfield’s softball team ended Tuesday. The No. 27 Pioneers were blanked by No. 6 Foxborough, 4-0, in the Div. 3 Round of 32, bringing their final record to 9-13.

Scoreless through three innings, Foxborough (14-7) scored two unearned runs during the fourth before plating two more in the sixth.

Lilly Gately (5 IP) and Gia Gagnon split pitching duties for the Pioneers, while Lynnfield’s offense struggled to string hits together.

Seniors Mallory DiSilvio, Olivia Kelter, Lillian Williams, and Gagnon graduate Friday.

SOFTBALL

No. 2 Central Catholic 13
No. 15 Peabody 7

You could say Peabody (13-5) put up a good fight against No. 2 Central Catholic (21-0), which kept its perfect record intact.

After trailing 6-0 out of the gate, the Tanners stormed back to make it 6-5. Peabody’s Taylor King smashed a home run late, but it wasn’t enough to hand the Raiders their first loss.

BOYS LACROSSE

No. 2 St. John’s Prep 16
No. 15 Needham 6

Five-time defending state champion St. John’s Prep cruised in Div. 1 action. The Eagles (18-2), who led 15-1 after three quarters, will host No. 7 Winchester or No. 10 Saint John’s Shrewsbury in the Round of 8 (Saturday at 11 a.m.).
