Peabody knocks off Saugus - Itemlive

PEABODY — The Peabody girls tennis team celebrated Senior Day with a 4-1 win over visiting Saugus on Monday afternoon.

“Just what the girls did today on Senior Day to make it special was great to see,” Peabody coach John Sousa said. “They took a lot of time and pride in making sure the day was special and showing the seniors they are loved. Seeing all of them together and showing the camaraderie they have is what the season is all about.”

Despite falling three games under .500 at 6-9, Saugus coach Guillermo Sepulveda said the season has still been a good one.

“We haven’t won this many games in many years,” Sepulveda said. “We’re having a successful season regardless of how it ends up, so I am very proud of the girls. We’re happy with the results this year. That is what the girls are going to remember. I have girls who only started playing this spring, and everyone on this team has improved.”

Peabody junior captain Alexandra Kourtelidis defeated Annabella Tum in first singles, 6-1, 6-0.

“This team this year has been very together, friendly and working together as a group,” Kourtelidis said. “Today and every day, it’s been great to have people cheering you on. My attitude today was to launch those forehands and put the ball where they’re not.”

Senior captain Tiffany Bettencourt followed with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Saugus’ Evelyne Meas at second singles.

“It was tough today with the sun, but I just tried to stay positive and keep breathing,” Bettencourt said. “Especially when things get worked up, I just tried to stay grounded, knowing this is where you need to be.”

The Tanners swept both doubles matches to seal the win. Senior captain Anna Maciel and Artemis Greko defeated Rania Mrabat and Stephanie Truong, 6-1, 7-5, at first doubles, while Shivaun Galvin and Lilly Hunt defeated Aiyana Cruz and Tori Tum, 6-1, 6-0, at second doubles.

“It was a good match, but the first set was pretty much an easier one compared to the second set,” Maciel said. “I’ve worked really hard all my life to be here today, so it’s been a great day.”

Saugus’ Jennifer Tran defeated  Peabody senior Yasnelly Fernandez in the longest match of the day, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, at third singles.

“I didn’t win my match, but the most important thing was we won as a collective,” Fernandez said. “It was pretty emotional being Senior Day, but I’m so happy with this season. I was injured recently but was able to pull through and play today. I’m proud of how I played today and how all of the girls played today.”

“She battled the whole match and returned some good forehands so she has nothing to hang her head about,” Sousa said. “That was the best tennis I’ve seen her play.”

Peabody (3-10) closes the season on Wednesday against Everett at 4 p.m.

“Obviously, it would be nice to end with another win, but it’s not always about your final record,” Sousa said. “We don’t know much about Everett as it’s a non-league game, but we’re excited to play as it is a non-league match and it will be nice to see a GBL team. They’re won some matches, so I expect it will be a good one.”

Saugus is back in action on Tuesday where the Sachems will host Triton at 3 p.m..

“We are hoping to get to .500 and get into the tournament and having the opportunity to do that is all we want,” Sepulveda said. “It’s been a long while since we made the tournament but with three matches in the next four days, this is crunch time but we have a good chance. We’ve never played Triton before but I think Triton is like (Peabody). Peabody has only won two matches before today, but they’re pretty good.”
