New alert system replaces hacked CodeRED

MARBLEHEAD — This week, the town officially launched Regroup, an emergency notification system known as MarbleheadAlerts.

MarbleheadAlerts is the town’s mass notification system for severe weather alerts, boil water orders, and other public safety issues.

Residents can choose to receive notifications by text message, email, or phone call, but they must sign up to receive alerts at embeds.regroupcloud.com/orgs/marbleheadma.

The system, powered by Regroup, replaces CodeRED and supports translation of text and email messages into most languages. Residents can also sign up to receive nonemergency notifications about elections and major town events.

Unlike CodeRED, the new system allows residents to customize the notifications they receive. The Department of Public Works, Municipal Light Department, and Harbormaster each have individual channels that residents can opt in or out of.

“In any emergency, getting accurate information to residents quickly can make all the difference,” Police Chief Dennis King and Fire Chief Jason Gillian said in a joint statement.

“MarbleheadAlerts gives our community a reliable way to stay informed about critical situations and important town updates,” they added. “We strongly encourage everyone to sign up so they can receive timely notifications that help keep them and their families safe.”

The town’s one-year agreement with Regroup totals $6,500 and includes full migration of the town’s existing contact data by the vendor. The cost fell below the $10,000 threshold that requires Select Board approval and is covered under an existing budget line item.

Regroup, headquartered in Texas, was selected in February to replace the hacked CodeRED system after a cyberattack disabled the emergency alert platform and rattled residents during a string of winter storms this past winter.
