Hoax bomb threat and shots fired in home invasion

Elizabeth Della Piana

SAUGUS — This weekend, the Saugus Police Department and State Police were busy in Saugus with multiple incidents, including a hoax threat involving a possible pipe bomb and a home invasion with shots fired.

At approximately 9 a.m. Saturday, Saugus police received a call reporting an active shooter at Walmart off Route 1, which turned out to be a hoax, according to a statement from the police.

The department reported that two different calls were made from men threatening the building and demanding money.

“When officers arrived along with the State Police, they did a thorough search of the facility and premises and determined that there was no threat and there were not armed men there,” the department stated.

On Sunday, just after noon, the department responded to multiple calls reporting two masked men, dressed in all black and armed with handguns, breaking into a house on Oakwood Avenue.

Police Chief Michael Ricciardelli reported that shots had been fired, but no one was injured.

According to a statement from the department, two men were detained. Officers will not speculate on the motive for the break-in. The pair are facing “several serious felony charges including home invasion charges.”

The two men arrested are Derek Matarazzo, of Boston, and Timothy Gregory, of Boston.

“Police say the public is no longer in danger. These two men were the only ones directly involved. This is believed to be an isolated incident,” the statement read.
