LYNN — With the junior varsity baseball teams of Lynn Classical, Lynn Tech, St. Mary’s, and Malden swinging for the fences at Fraser Field, the fourth annual Dick Maag Tournament was another successful one.

St. Mary’s stayed perfect, capturing its fourth title in as many years. The Spartans clipped Classical 6-1 in the championship game as Brock Hogan was named Most Valuable Player, alongside All-Tournament selections Chris Ferreira (Malden), Joey Leclair (Tech), Kevin Severino (Classical), and Jackson Barrett (St. Mary’s).

“It was a great way to honor the legacy of Coach Maag,” said Classical coach Pat Whalen, who created the tournament in 2023. “We have been doing this tournament for four years now and every year has been better than the last. We had a great environment from the fans with a lot of varsity players from all four schools cheering their respective schools on. We are looking forward to year five next year.”

In the second inning of the championship game, St. Mary’s scored first after Barrett was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, and Hogan singled, scoring two more.

Spartans’ pitcher Trent Cahill surrendered just two hits and a run across six innings. He struck out eight batters and walked one.

Daynel Almonte took the bump for Classical, allowing four hits and five earned runs across five innings to go with eight strikeouts and six walks.

Classical blanked Tech 11-0 in round one, while St. Mary’s took care of Malden 9-4. The consolation game saw the Tigers escape Malden 7-4.

Maag, who died in 2023 at 83, coached baseball with Classical for more than 20 years and was part of Lynn’s school system for 38 years. The 1957 basketball captain was inducted into Classical’s Hall of Fame in 2019.
