PEABODY — Shaw’s Supermarket has once again selected the Peabody Education Foundation to benefit from its “Give Back Where It Counts” Reusable Bag Program, meaning shoppers have an easy way to support their community and environment by buying durable, reusable shopping bags.

For the month of May, whenever a $3 “Give Back Where It Counts” Reusable Bag is purchased at the Shaw’s located at 128 Essex Center Dr., $1 will be donated to the PEF.

This reusable bag program launched in March 2019 and works toward facilitating community support with the goal of making a difference in the communities where shoppers live and work. Since its inception, the program has donated almost $380,000 to more than 2,700 nonprofit organizations.

The PEF provides unique programs and advanced technology to thousands of students who might otherwise not enjoy such experiences due to budget constraints. The PEF’s programs are intended to benefit and guide children as they develop into successful citizens and leaders.

With the support of the community, the PEF is able to continue offering programs to encourage creativity and inspiration in Peabody’s students. Just this school year, the PEF has contributed $125,000 into the schools.

PEF Vice President and Vice Chair of the Board Mary Bellavance highlighted that it’s not much work for PEF to participate in this program, but it’s getting the word out that is truly her goal.

“We’re a charity,” she said. “Whatever we can bring (in) helps because pretty much everything we take in, no matter what the fundraiser (is), (it) all goes back into the schools, so it benefits the kids in the community more than anything.”
