Weekend roundup: Softball Spartans conquer in style


St. Mary’s softball team (16-4) defeated Concord-Carlisle 11-2, then Reading Memorial 3-2 to capture the St. Mary’s Invitational. Sydney Wells was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

For all the marbles, St. Mary’s pitcher Aliza Crean-Oviedo (7 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, BB, 4 K) rose to the occasion, recording 21 outs against Reading.

Maya Oliva, batting from the No. 9 spot, was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Wells batted 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, while Cate Morgan collected a pair of hits.

Both games were played Saturday at Breed Middle School’s Grace Rogato Field.

BASEBALL

Marblehead 9
Manchester-Essex 6

Marblehead (12-8) wrapped its regular season with a strong offensive display, a contrast from its season-opening 1-0 loss against the same Manchester-Essex side. Do-it-all Tim Wales (4-for-4) led the Magicians with a homer, four RBI, and three runs scored.

Andrew Dellacamera batted 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Starter Yanzel Fuentes, Collin Allen (WP), and Madden Lyons (S) shared pitching duties for the Red and Black.

Swampscott 11
Lynn English 1

In the consolation game of the Doug Mullins Memorial Baseball Tournament, Swampscott (16-4) secured third place with a double-digit win against the Bulldogs. Chase Groothuis (6 IP, R, 3 BB, 11 K) snatched his third win, also compiling two hits and two RBI offensively.

Dylan DiFilippo (3 H, 2 RBI, 3 R), Michael Collins (2 H, RBI), and Calsimitto (2 R) helped the Big Blue cause.
