REGION — Nov. 11 marks the date in 1918 when Germany and the Allied nations signed an armistice ending World War I. Since 1954, it has been recognized in the United States as Veterans Day — a federal holiday to honor American veterans for their patriotism, sacrifice, and service.
This Veterans Day, communities throughout the region are honoring those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
LYNN
The City of Lynn will host a veterans breakfast served by city officials at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at City Hall. The breakfast will be followed by a ceremony at the Lynn Veterans Memorial Auditorium at 10 a.m. that will feature the Lynn English ROTC and the Lynn All City Band.
LYNNFIELD
The Lynnfield Veterans Day Celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lynnfield Common.
MARBLEHEAD
The Town of Marblehead will hold a Veterans Day service at 10 a.m. Saturday at Abbott Hall. A shuttle service from the National Grand Bank parking lot will be available starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 9:45 a.m.
The Beacon Marblehead will host a Wreaths Across America fundraiser event to raise money for the organization’s annual Dec. 16 event, in which wreaths are laid on the graves of every veteran in town. Doors to the restaurant open at 4 p.m. before the event begins at 6 p.m. Guest speaker Gen. David McKiernan will be in attendance and a number of activities will be held, including a silent auction, 50/50 raffles, and entertainment provided by the Guy Ford Band.
The Marblehead VFW will hold its own veterans service at 5 p.m. Saturday. All veterans are welcome and Army stew will be served immediately following the service.
NAHANT
The American Legion Post 215 will host a coffee and pastry meet-and-greet at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, followed by a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. in Veterans Park.
PEABODY
The City of Peabody will honor veterans with a ceremony outside City Hall at 11 a.m. Following the service, the Rotary Club of Peabody will hold a Walk for Veterans, led by the Veterans High School Junior ROTC Honor Guard, followed by veterans, Rotarians, public officials, and all who wish to support the country’s veterans. At the end of the short walk, Rotarians will clean the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at the Courthouse Plaza.
SAUGUS
Saugus will host a Field of Flags ceremony honoring those who served at 11 a.m. Saturday at Veterans Park at the intersection of Central and Winter streets.
SWAMPSCOTT
The E.F. Gilmore Disabled American Veterans of Swampscott and Lynn will hold a veterans breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Council on Aging Center at 200 Essex St., followed by a ceremony honoring veterans at 11 a.m. at Monument Avenue.
