Swampscott strives for cleaner beaches

SWAMPSCOTT—The Water and Sewer Infrastructure Committee are attempting new ways to combat the bacteria problem on King’s Beach.

The Steering Committee, a joint collaboration between Lynn and Swampscott, is circling around the notion of using ultraviolet light as an abstract means of killing bacteria.

As the committee begins to enter Phase II of the project, the bid for the pilot (which will act as a kind of initial test to see if it can be successful) will go out in January of 2025.

“We’re trying to find a faster path to get the beaches open,” said Elizabeth Smith, Committee Chair. “The overall goal we all want to work toward is getting the beaches open to the public as soon as possible.”

According to Smith, further work will commence in the spring to ensure efficient progress is made to making the beach more accessible and safer for public use.
