The officers read a book to the children about police K-9s and their roles in assisting during times of need. They discussed how Sora’s job includes comforting those in need and providing emotional support, as well as helping to locate lost or missing individuals.

The surprise visit was organized by the preschool as part of a month-long program teaching children about the roles of various community helpers, including the importance of law enforcement in the community.

“We had so much fun speaking with the children and explaining what we do,” the Swampscott Police Department wrote in a Facebook post. “We can’t thank you enough for having us, and we look forward to coming back again.”

“I will never forget how those police officers who visited me while I was in grade school made a lasting impact on me,” Police Chief Rueban Quesada said. “We recognize it is our duty and honor to pay that same sentiment forward.”

Afterward, each child received a small plush dog, provided by the preschool, as a memento of their experience with the officers and Sora.

“I am so honored to be part of an organization that values the children in our community,” Quesada said. “Each child deserves a chance to learn, grow, and bloom. If we can provide part of the sunshine that allows them to thrive, then we know there is a ray of hope for the world.”

“The whole thing was a blast,” Preschool Director Mirna Garcia said. “Everybody had a great time. The kids loved it, and I know the officers had fun as well. It was a really good experience.”
