It was an action-packed night of state tournament football, especially for the City of Lynn, which saw four of its high school teams take the field for all the marbles.

All that said, the Lynn English (see story), Lynn Tech, St. Mary’s, and KIPP Academy programs all bowed out of their respective tournaments.

Ninth-ranked St. Mary’s made the trip to face No. 8 Sandwich in Division 6 action, but fell by a score of 20-15. Yaniel Belliard found Sam Phelps for a 49-yard touchdown with 6:26 to go, but Sandwich chewed up the clock well from that point on.

Truth be told, it was a picture-perfect start for the Spartans (7-2), who marched 93 yards for the game’s first points. Maxwell Parent found the endzone, followed by Rowan Merryman’s two-point conversion.

KIPP was on the wrong end of an upset at Manning Field. Bourne, ranked No. 11 in Division 8, took down the No. 6 Panthers in a 27-6 final.

Quarterback Elai Machado spotted Jose Echavarria for a 31-yard touchdown and the first score of the game, but that would be it for the hosts. Bourne, on the other hand, put on a show with a touchdown in all four quarters. Drew Kelley led the way for the visitors with 9- and 11-yard touchdowns on the ground.

The Panthers checked out with a record of 5-4, while Bourne advanced to the round of 8 against No. 3 Carver.

Speaking of Carver, it took down No. 14 Lynn Tech by a score of 28-0. The host Crusaders tallied 14 points in each half with running back Jack Balzarini leading the charge with two rushing scores.

The Tigers, who couldn’t find their rhythm on either side of the ball, sport a record of 4-4.
