LYNN — Different year. Same result.
For the fifth consecutive year since the tournament’s inception, St. Mary’s baseball team is your Doug Mullins Memorial Baseball Tournament champion. The Spartans clipped Lynn Classical 8-0 Saturday at Fraser Field.
Sophomore Brennan Malloy (7 IP, 2 BB, 7 K) pitched a complete-game gem, holding the Rams to just three hits. He helped his cause at the plate, batting 2-for-2 with one run scored and an RBI, reaching base in all four plate appearances.
St. Mary’s senior captain Michael DeMaino (2-for-5, R) sealed the win with a two-run triple in the top of the seventh. Jacob Peterson (2-for-4, R) and senior captain Kyle Doney (2-for-3) also registered multiple-hit games.
“Brennan has been our No. 1 guy all year,” Spartans’ coach Dereck Dana said. “He dominated and is just getting better and better every time out. This year, he really took a giant step forward. On top of that, he got some hits, so it was just an outstanding day for him.”
Malloy credited his teammates for having his back.
“I felt like my fastball was working well and I felt like my arm was good,” he said. “The big thing was my team behind me was making plays and playing really well. That gave me a lot of confidence.”
Classical catcher Jayden Barragan, who knocked in the game-winning run Friday in the Rams’ comeback win against Swampscott, maintained his hot bat with two hits.
“We played a heck of a game yesterday, but the energy was a little down today,” said Classical coach Jason Rogato. “This is a no-quit team and the boys played until the end, so that’s all you can ask for. We had chances, but we couldn’t get hits when we needed them. Yesterday, they were there, but today, they weren’t. That’s baseball.”
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when senior captain Micah Hashikawa led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on Kalen Huddle’s single.
A couple of unearned runs in the fifth and another in the sixth bumped the Spartans’ lead to 4-0.
St. Mary’s put the game out of reach with four runs (2 unearned) in the seventh — the big hit being DeMaino’s triple.
Dana had high praise for his shortstop.
“He’s been on base all weekend, but that triple was in the right spot to put us in a better position,” Dana said. “He does a great job. He’s got a great arm, can fly around the bases, and has been the lead dog as a leadoff hitter. He sets the table and gets us going.”
Classical starter Mark Walsh (8 H, 3 BB, 5 K, 3 HBP) gave up just two earned runs across six-plus innings and took the loss. Rogato said Walsh and Barragan had good games.
“Mark had to throw some extra pitches today, unfortunately, with all those unearned runs,” Rogato said. “He fought until his very last pitch, so I have to commend him for that. He just kept throwing and never gave up, so I have to be proud of that. He really gutted it out.
“Jayden’s been hot. He continues to work for us,” Rogato said. “He’s caught a lot of games and is doing a good job.”
Dana and Malloy agreed the Mullins tournament is special.
“I coached Dougie in football and baseball when I was at Classical and he was part of my staff here at St. Mary’s before he got the job at English,” Dana said. “I love the kid, so if we can honor him at this tournament, we feel good to win it.”
“It’s a great feeling, coming out here for this tournament,” Malloy said. “This is the fifth year of us playing in this and the fifth year of winning it. It feels great coming out here playing for such a good reason.”
St. Mary’s (16-3) closes out its regular season Monday at home against Boston English. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
“We’re not going to overlook that,” Dana said. “They’re athletic and well-coached. We know they will show up and compete. The kids know what’s coming down the road and we try to prepare them for this time of year. Every game is the most important game of the season.”
With the regular season in the books, Rogato said the Rams (13-7) are focused on the postseason.
“We know we’ll have an away game, but we’ve had a good season,” he said. “We just need to get back at it and go get them.”
