Saugus' Board of Health hears updates from WIN

SAUGUS — The Board of Health heard an update from WIN Waste Innovations on the plant’s operations during the board’s meeting Monday night.

Casey said that since the board’s last meeting on June 10, the facility operated at approximately 95% boiler availability, processed slightly more than 109,000 tons, and generated slightly more than 59,000 megawatts.

During that time, the facility had five unscheduled downtime events, which totaled 69 hours, and two scheduled maintenance events, which totaled 146 hours.

Casey said that on the evening of Sunday, Sept. 8, the facility started a scheduled maintenance event.

Additionally, Casey said that since the last meeting, slightly less than 13,000 tons of ash were shipped from the facility to a landfill in Shrewsbury.

Casey said that there were no excess-emission events or radioactive loads since the last briefing the board received.

He added that at one point, a wind crossed over the monofill, “causing several large perimeter trees to topple.

“The landfill operator notified site management that approximately a dozen of the large poplar trees were down,” Casey said.

Due to the trees’ close proximity to wetlands, the town’s Conservation Commission was notified.

Casey added that on Sept. 3, at approximately 8 a.m., an employee at the facility injured their finger, requiring ambulance services.

“An ambulance and the Saugus Fire Department were called to the site,” Casey said. “The employee was taken by ambulance off site for the medical evaluation.”

Casey said that the employee is due back Monday, Sept. 16.

Casey also noted an event held last week, at which WIN collaborated with the Boys & Girls Club to provide backpacks and school supplies. He said the event had roughly 300 students and their families in attendance, and that WIN is looking forward to working further with the community.

Casey added that WIN will be in attendance at Founders Day, which is being held on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Saugus Center.
