For the 30th time in 34 years, the St. John’s Prep Eagles are Catholic Conference champions. Head coach Mark Metropolis and his squad are a perfect 13-0 overall and 9-0 in the league.
The Eagles hosted Malden Catholic and the Lancers suffered a similar fate that most teams have experienced going up against St. John’s Prep, a 5-0 sweep.
It was a near-perfect overall match as the Eagles dropped just one set across the five matches.
In first singles, John DeAngelis defeated Jack Burgess 6-0, 6-0, while in second singles Jack Prokopis took care of Nan Dinh 6-0, 6-0 to get the Eagles off to a commanding start.
Third singles, Luke Free, was too much for Lucas Wang, defeating him in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
First doubles, Wade Evits and Charlie Weld, showed their chemistry beating Matteo Peledge and Drew Rynak 6-0, 6-1.
Second doubles, Chris Melville and Ciaran de Buy Wenniger, defeated Julian Cuper and James Guild 6-0, 6-0.
Earlier this season, Metropolis earned his 500th win at St. John’s Prep against Wellesley High and now he adds another Catholic Conference title to his already impressive resume.
BOYS TENNIS
Lynn Classical 5
Medford 0
The Rams picked up the home victory against the Mustangs. The win moves Lynn Classical to 6-4 on the season.
First singles Victor Bun won the first set 6-4 before dropping the second set 3-6. Bun showed his mental fortitude and fought back in the third set to take the match 7-6.
Classical got wins from Axil Ortiz (7-5 6-2), Donovan Lam and Ori Beato (6-3 6-4), Andy Ly and Tommy Prou (6-1 6-2), and a win by forfeit.
Swampscott 4
Salem 1
The Big Blue walked into Salem and went home with the win to bring their record to 10-2.
First singles Charles Schepens won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Third singles and senior captain, James Dicker, beat Eden McClain 6-4, 6-1.
Swampscott’s doubles team showed why they’re some of the best in the Northeastern Conference. First doubles, Julian Flake and Lucas Breaud won their respective match 6-0, 6-1.
Second doubles, Elijah Statlander and senior captain Tex Graph won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
Lynnfield 5
Amesbury 0
Thanks to a dominant display from singles Dan Levin (6-0, 6-0), Russell Kasdon (6-1, 6-1), and Alessandro Raimondi (6-0, 6-0) the Pioneers remain undefeated sitting at 9-0.
Lynnfield fielded six seniors on senior day to celebrate its seniors.
Raimondi achieved his first varsity win as well as senior Luke McQueen. McQueen won at second doubles with senior partner Kurt Rothermund (6-0, 6-0).
Seniors Brendan Sokop and Slate Lopilato won at first doubles (6-1, 6-2).
GIRLS TENNIS
Swampscott 5
Salem 0
It was a perfect day at home for Swampscott. With good weather came a good performance from each player as the Big Blue protected home court with the sweep.
Swampscott’s Anna Eccles (6-2, 6-1), Sasha Fafel (6-2,6-3), and May Hood (6-2,6-2) all took home wins in singles.
For doubles, Victoria Quagrello and Sydney Antonelli won comfortably (6-1,6-1), with second doubles Ava and Alexia O’Donnell getting the clean sweep (6-0,6-0).
Medford 4
Lynn Classical 1
It was a tough day for the Rams against Medford. Freshman, Amber Sotomayer, was the lone bright spot for Classical winning at first singles 6-1, 6-0.
Lynnfield 5
Amesbury 0
The Pioneers (8-3) get another clean sweep.
The doubles shined with neither the first nor second team dropping a set. Vicky McCrann and Emma Wagon won 6-0, 6-0, while second doubles Nandana Nishanth and Fiona Asaad followed suit with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Marblehead 5
Peabody 0
On senior day, the Magicians seniors got the job done against the Tanners.
First singles Maddie Conlon won 6-3, 6-4, second singles Aviva Bornstein won 6-2, 6-1, and third singles Sami Dosch won 6-2, 6-1 to lead the Magicians.
First doubles senior duo Aoife Bresnahan and Lucia Levin remain undefeated in conference play winning 6-1, 6-1. Second doubles Lani Gilmore and Reese Friedman picked up the win 6-2, 6-1.
“It was a perfect tennis weather day and also super special that we got to celebrate our 6 seniors, along with recognizing Peabody’s seniors as well,” Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman said. “As a coach, it was great to see the sportsmanship shown by both teams and mutual admiration for its upcoming graduates. It epitomizes what playing High School tennis is all about.”
BASEBALL
St. John’s Prep 7
Catholic Memorial 1
St. John’s Prep’s Anthony Romano brought his A game against Catholic Memorial. Romano went 6 1/3 innings striking out six and allowing two hits in the win.
The game was tight before the Eagles scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a substantial lead into the final innings.
Gavin Gold had an RBI double and a single in the win. Teammate Will Shaheen registered an RBI triple and recorded two strikeouts in relief.
Marblehead 9
Bishop Fenwick 2
The Magicians protected their home field with a dominant win over a quality Bishop Fenwick squad.
The Crusaders got on the board first taking a 1-0 lead after the top of the first before Marblehead quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Marblehead led three to two after the fifth inning before exploding for six runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Jacob Behn scored a run and earned a walk.
Lynn Tech 8
Nashoba Tech 7
The Tigers (9-6) are back in the win column with a nail-biting win on the road.
Chris Boyd got the start before making way for Will McCafferty who came in relief and dealt eight strikeouts.
Boyd at the plate went 3-for-4 with one RBI. Nevin Gonzalez went 2-for-2 while teammate Roman Valdez went 2-for-3 in the win.
“I feel like we just really slowed down after the second inning. I give our opponents credit. Everything they hit were gap shots, bloopers or simply just splitting our defenders. There was nothing we could do,” Tigers coach Eddie Lewis said.
The Tigers stayed patient after giving up early runs, but found some energy late to get the job done. Lynn Tech is one win away from qualifying for the postseason.
Lynn English 15
Chelsea 1
The Bulldogs got a six RBI performance from Gamalier Calderon who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two home runs to power English. Kyle Furlong chipped in with four RBI and went 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk.
The Bulldogs scored 10 of its 15 runs in the second inning.
In the second game of the doubleheader, English beat Chelsea 9-0.
The Bulldogs got six runs in the fifth inning to put a stamp on the game and left the field with two victories.
Peabody 4
Saugus 3
In a closely contested game, the Tanners edged it thanks to the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Saugus struck first in the first inning, scoring two runs and adding a third in the third inning. However, the Tanners responded with a run in the second inning and two in the third before its game-winning run in the fourth inning to take the lead and not look back.
Remy Guerro got the win on the mound going 6 1/3 innings allowing two hits, striking out nine, and walking four.
Leading the Peabody offense was Josh Sigmon (3-for-3 with two RBI), Mike Petro (3-for-4 with a run), Steve Porcella (1-for-2 1 RBI), and Liam Hurley (1-for-3 with a run).
SOFTBALL
Beverly 4
Marblehead 0
The Magicians ran into a buzzsaw on the mound in Lidia Miedema. Miedema powered Beverly to the win with a no-hitter.
Miedema started the game retiring the first 15 batters and didn’t look back. Miedema was close to a perfect game, but she hit a Magicians batter in the sixth inning to spoil the achievement.
Beverly remains perfect in the Northeastern Conference.
Lynnfield 4
Essex Tech 2
The Pioneers win on senior day to move to 7-8 on the season and 5-6 in the Cape Ann league.
It was the seniors coming up clutch for Lynnfield. Senior Sophia Brown, despite having runners on base, got out of each jam she faced. Brown left 10 Essex Tech runners on base en route to the win.
Senior Ava Gamache broke the 2-2 deadlock with a two-RBI hit bringing home Julia Corrente and Lily Williams.
On defense, senior Catie Kampersal anchored the Pioneers making big plays and covering every blade of grass in center field.
Lynn English 12
Chelsea 0
The bats were hot on Monday for the Bulldogs who steamrolled Chelsea. Arianna Laboy was dominant on the mound allowing zero hits and striking out 14 in five innings.
Kate Johansson led the Bulldogs on offense scoring two runs and recording two RBI and a walk in the win.
LeaNyah Pineiro, went 1-for-2 at the plate with a RBI, two walks, and two runs scored.
The Bulldogs scored at least one run in every inning, including five in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Gloucester 4
Bishop Fenwick 1
The Crusaders fall to Gloucester at home. Fenwick gave up three runs in the third inning which proved to be costly.
Guilianna Miccheche went 2 1/3 innings allowing five hits, three walks, and three earned runs in the loss.
Lulu Dias went 1-for-1 with a RBI for the Crusaders.
Peabody 20
Winthrop 0
It was a night the Vikings will try to forget quickly as the Tanners flexed their offensive powers against Winthrop.
Saugus 3
Northeast Metro 1
The Sachems picked up the home win to move to 6-8 on the season.
Taylor Deleidi went the distance on the mound allowing three hits, and one unearned run, while striking out seven.
“She was brilliant. It was probably one of her best pitching games of the year,” Saugus coach Steve Almquist said.
On offense, eighth-grader Sabrina Tamburello had an RBI double in the fourth inning to give Saugus the go-ahead run.
Felicia Alexander went 2-for-3 with a single and an RBI.
Saugus will travel to Swampscott to take on the Big Blue on Wednesday.
Swampscott 12
Melrose 3
The Big Blue recorded 14 total hits to take care of business against visiting Melrose.
Swampscott’s, Mia Tringale, got the win on the mound striking out 10 and allowing five hits.
Offensively, Delaney Miller went 3-for-3 with two RBI while Hayden Haskell showed her speed around the bases hitting two triples and bringing in three runs. Maddie Lilley chipped in going 3-for-4 at the plate for Swampscott.
BOYS LACROSSE
Marblehead 13
Masco 5
The Magicians got out to a strong start against Masco scoring seven goals in the first half. Not only was Marblehead dominating possession, but when Masco got the ball it had trouble getting past the Magicians defense who let up just two goals in the first 24 minutes.
It was more of the same as Masco struggled to get its offense going and Marblehead took advantage on the offensive end scoring six more goals in the second half.
Swampscott 22
Saugus 2
The Big Blue scored 12 of their 17 first-half goals in the second quarter to lead 17-1 at halftime. Saugus tightened up its defense in the second half only allowing five goals, but the damage was all but done.
Swampscott was led by John Von Barta (4 goals, 1 assist), Jason Rothwell (3 goals, 1 assist), Liam Keaney (4 goals, 5 assists), and Chase Russo (2 goals, 6 assists).
GIRLS LACROSSE
Peabody 14
Beverly 10
Needing a win to clinch the Northeastern Conference, the Peabody Tanners (12-2) proved why they’re the best in the conference (12-0 in NEC). The second quarter seemed to prove pivotal for the Tanners as it got the win against Beverly. Peabody was down 3-4 after the first quarter, but rallied in the second to take the lead at halftime 9-4 thanks to multiple goals from Madi Barrett and Ally Bettencourt.
Both teams continued to find the back of the net in the third, giving Peabody a 12-6 lead going into the final 12 minutes.
Beverly stepped on the gas in the fourth scoring four goals, but it wasn’t enough as Peabody escaped with a 14-10 lead and the NEC title.
Peabody’s Caitlin Snow made 15 saves and was “incredible in net” according to head coach Michelle Roach.
On offense, the Tanners got goals from Barrett (2 goals, 1 assist), Bettencourt (4 goals, 2 assists), Katie Amico (1 goal), and Brooke Lomasney (7 goals, 2 assists).
Masco 16
Marblehead 6
The Magicians (4-10) fell to Masco on the road on Monday afternoon.
Masco led 7-1 at half, but didn’t allow Marblehead to get back into the game in the second half.
Maddie Forbes did a bit of everything for the Magicians scoring two goals, providing two assists, and picking up three ground balls.
Ramona Gillett scored and assisted, while freshman Kathryn Commoss scored two goals.
Freshman goalie, Molly Bullard, recorded seven saves in the loss.
St. Mary’s 17
Cardinal Spellman 11
The Spartans (8-5) defend Manning Field and finish third in the Catholic Central League. This is the best league finish for St. Mary’s in six years.
Ava Nason continued to show why she’s one of the best in the conference, scoring seven goals, while teammate Keira Twomey chipped in with three to lead St. Mary’s.
VOLLEYBALL
Lynn Classical 3
Somerville 0
The Rams pick up win number 12 on the season. Lynn Classical (12-4; 7-4 in the Greater Boston League) took care of business at home winning in straight sets (25-23, 25-17, 25-20).
Libero Long Pham registered 26 digs and two assists. Viet Tran did a little bit of everything, finishing the match with 14 kills, eight digs, and an ace. Kenzel Lantano finished with 30 assists, four aces, four digs, and one kill.
It was a slow start for the Rams, but when they needed it most, key players stepped up.
“Somerville came out strong in the first set and we played like a team that hadn’t played since Wednesday. They really pressed us early and we didn’t really respond,” Head coach Chris LeBlanc said. “We were constantly fighting from behind and when we were behind 20-17 we needed a spark and Kenzel stepped up with a kill and two aces in short order to put us up 24-22 before Viet Tran finished the set with a monster swing off the block for a kill.”
Greater Lawrence 3
Lynn Tech 0
It was a tough road game for Lynn Tech falling in straight sets (15-25, 20-25, 20-25).
Elmer Duran had 20 assists and five digs, while teammate Felipe De Oliveria had 19 digs.
Ederick Gonzalez had 10 kills and 10 digs. Didlaire Jacques Jr. netted seven blocks and four kills.
The loss drops Lynn Tech to 8-6.
