Avenging last season’s heartbreaking loss to St. Mary’s in the city volleyball tournament, Lynn Classical found revenge and swept the Spartans (25-19, 26-24, 25-8) Friday evening to make it three city titles in four years.

The second set showed what the Lady Rams were made of, as the Spartans raced to an 18-9 lead. 

“We never panicked and chipped away at the lead with contributions from everyone on the floor,” said Classical coach Chris LeBlanc. “On championship point (in the third set), the Rams looked to their captain, Amanda Hughes, who delivered a clean kill into the middle of the court.”

Leading the way for Classical were Caitlin Kelley (8 aces, 5 digs), Tournament MVP Emma Chevalier (20 assists, 3 kills, 9 digs, 2 aces), and Hughes (10 kills, 6 digs, 2 aces).

Host Lynn Tech took care of Lynn English (25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 25-12) in the city consolation game to improve to 1-2 on the young season. Leading the way were Lia Morales (9 digs, 6 kills, 6 aces, 2 blocks), Zahara Belizaire (10 assists, 6 digs, 4 kills), Ana Godoy (7 digs, 3 aces), Katie Tartarini (4 aces, 3 kills), Kaylee Deschamps (2 aces, 2 kills, block), Niya Bingham (6 kills), Kayla Rivera (8 digs), and Stephanie Hernandez (5 aces).

In set scores of 19-25, 25-10, 25-20, and 25-16, Swampscott came from behind to knock off Revere on enemy hardwood. Jamie Andrews led the way with 18 service points, seven aces, and six digs, followed by Marta Sirota (16 digs) and Lauren Paul (8 kills).

North Andover 0

In set scores of 25-8, 25-15, and 25-16, Marblehead picked up an early-season home win against North Andover. Mari Modryznska (10 kills, 4 aces, 8 digs) led the way alongside Greta Sachs, who “dominated the net all evening” with eight kills, according to coach Killeen Miller.

Eva Burke had 19 assists, while senior captain Megan Parkman racked up nine digs.

“Senior captain Megan Parkman did a tremendous job leading this group back tonight after a tough loss to Masco on Wednesday,” Miller said. “The girls were motivated and came out ready to prove themselves, and Megan kept them moving in the right direction.”

St. John’s Prep 42

Marshfield 20

The St. John’s Prep Eagles put on a show for their home faithful Friday night, flying right over Marshfield, 42-20, in Week 1. Lynn’s Edwin Castro made big play after big play, going home with two touchdowns and an interception to lead The Prep.

Freshman gunslinger Christopher Vargas tossed two touchdowns, while Deacon Robillard threw another. On the receiving end, Merrick Barlow hauled in two touchdown passes and Riley Selvais added one of his own.

The Prep hosts Londonderry at 7 p.m. next Friday.

BOYS SOCCER

Masconomet 2

Peabody 0

After some early-season heroics against Danvers to kick off the fall, host Peabody fell to 1-1 in a showdown with Masconomet. 

“Played very well between the 30s, but couldn’t finish on the offensive end,” said Peabody coach Stan McKeen. “We had some opportunities.”

Luke Murray was “a monster on defense,” according to McKeen, who also credited Joaquim Nunes, Omar Mishal, and Dylan Flanagan for playing strong games.

The Tanners return to action against Salem on Monday.

Taylor Valiton scored a pair of goals for Lynnfield, but Newburport escaped victorious, 3-2, on its home turf. Lily Alves and Cameron Munion assisted Valiton’s first strike, while Izzy Florentino and Lauren Mattia did the honors on the second goal.

Lynnfield goalie Lauren MacDonald stood on her head, making 11 saves and facing four penalty corners from Newburyport.
