ROUNDUP: Headers complete regular season turnaround

[ad_1]

The Marblehead hockey team skated its way to a Fournier Division championship in the Newburyport Bank Classic Tournament on Tuesday, topping Triton to end the regular season with a 12-9-1 record.

In the 2-1 final at Graf Skating Rink in Newburyport, James Caeran and Toby Grenier were on goal-scoring duties – both finding twine in the second period – while Leo Burdge made 24 big saves between the pipes.

Burdge was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. His Headers check in at No. 7 in the MIAA Division 2 power rankings after starting the winter 0-6.

Marblehead defeated Andover, 4-1, to advance to the title game as five Headers dished out assists.

BOYS HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 1

Belmont 0

The Spartans advanced to Wednesday’s championship game of the Cardinal Classic (TBD) with a narrow 1-0 victory against Belmont at Olympia Ice Center.

Marc Hilton scored the lone goal, while Matthew Smith Jr. sported the shutout for No. 22 St. Mary’s (11-9-1). The Spartans also outshot Belmont, 46-35.

St. Bernard’s-Fitchburg 6

Peabody-Saugus 1

Despite a goal from Brandon Barone off an assist from Dom Chianca, it wasn’t Peabody-Saugus’ day in a 6-1 loss to host St. Bernard’s-Fitchburg.

Peabody-Saugus head coach Jason Marshall did applaud goalie Evan Tybinkowski, however, as the netminder went home with 27 saves.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Notre Dame (Hingham) 2

St. Mary’s 1

Talk about an early-evening dandy. In a powerhouse matchup between the top two teams in the state, No. 1 St. Mary’s dropped one to No. 2 Notre Dame (Hingham) in the Hingham Showcase.

Bella Freitas ripped one blocker-side for the Spartans (18-2-1) early, but St. Mary’s struggled to find its offense from that point on. Notre Dame found its equalizer in the second, then Emma Burke wristed a point-shot into the top corner to win the game in sudden death.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Swampscott 50

Salem 31

Swampscott’s girls basketball team wrapped its season with an 8-12 record Tuesday afternoon, handling Salem with ease.

The Big Blue were led by dynamic freshman Olivia Quagrello, who netted a career-high 30 points alongside 10 steals.

But she wasn’t the only Quagrello to make an impact.

“Victoria Quagrello had another outstanding day on the boards, finishing with eight rebounds,” said Swampscott coach Katelyn Leonard.

Wakefield 57

Saugus 30

Wakefield entered Tuesday’s matchup as the No. 15 seed in Division 2. Four quarters later, its record jumped to 14-5 with a win against the Sachems, who fell to 13-6 and clock in at No. 25 in Division 3.
