The No. 34 Lynn Classical girls basketball team fell in the preliminary round of the MIAA Division 3 state tournament Monday evening, dropping a 50-41 final to No. 31 Notre Dame Academy of Worcester.

In the single-digit defeat, positives were aplenty. Classical’s leading scorer was senior Lauren Wilson (17 points), followed by Keisha Perez (12) and Divine Egbuta (8).

The Lady Rams – helmed by coach Tom Sawyer – check out at 14-5, while Notre Dame, 8-13, is on to the Round of 32 to play No. 2 Norwell later this week (TBD).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Winthrop 73

Bethany Christian 29

No. 20 Winthrop took care of business at home – and then some. The Vikings sent No. 45 Bethany Christian packing with a 73-29 win to kick off the Division 4 state tournament

Reese Brodin (14 points), Grace Fleuriel (11), Sophia Lindinger (10), Kaylee Farrell (9), and Bailey Ferguson (9) led the way.

Winthrop visits No. 13 Wahconah Regional in a dandy Thursday night (5 p.m.).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Springfield International Charter School 64

Swampscott 62

In a “heartbreaker,” as said by Swampscott coach Jason Knowles, his No. 35 Big Blue lost at the buzzer against No. 30 Springfield Int’l in enemy territory.

“We were down most of the game and kept chipping away and tied the game with 5.7 seconds left,” Knowles said. “SICS called a timeout, then made a very difficult pass down the court and one of their players made a tough shot to win the game.”

Connor Chiarello dropped 30 points, followed by Liam Wales (18) and Jake Collins (8).

“I’m proud of the way our guys battled all game and never let up,” Knowles said. “They left it all on the court.”

Boston Latin 57

St. John’s Prep 54

In one of the state’s first upsets, the No. 23 St. John’s Prep basketball team was bested by No. 42 Boston Latin in overtime, stunning the Eagles on their home floor.

After the Division 1 showdown, Prep finishes 6-15, while Boston Latin takes on No. 10 Lawrence at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
