ROUNDUP: Bulldogs get the knockout against Boxers

[ad_1]

The Lynn English boys basketball team – fresh off its Greater Boston League crowning on Thursday – protected homecourt against Brockton Friday night, 84-79, but it wasn’t easy.

They don’t call them the Boxers for nothing. Brockton took a lead in the third quarter after a loud dunk, and thanks to some sharpshooting, entered the fourth quarter down just one (67-66).

But English put on a show in the fourth quarter. Kyle Kemembin connected at the rim to give the hosts an 82-74 lead with a minute remaining.

Brockton went on a 5-0 run to make things interesting, but it wasn’t enough to top the Bulldogs, who upped their record to 15-3 on a Senior Night they’ll never forget.

English’s Pierre Vera (16 points), Carmelo Buese (15), Pauwill Deng (14), Denzell Guillen (14), Kemembin (13), and Joshua Anderson (10) led the charge.

The Bulldogs host Cambridge Rindge & Latin (14-2) Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in another dandy.

Lynn Tech’s Giovanni Jean played the role of floor general in this one, sporting 12 points and five assists in his team’s double-digit win against host Greater Lowell.

For the 12-1 Tigers (9-1 in Commonwealth Athletic Conference), other usual suspects came to play, those being Jayden Welch (19 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists) and Ederick Gonzalez (19 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists).

The Big Blue are red hot. Swampscott upped its record to 11-6 with a monstrous win against Winthrop in enemy waters. Connor Chiarello scored a game-high 18 points, followed by Liam Wales (15), Nakeylan Davis (10), and Adam Sparacio (10).

Swampscott visits Salem High on Tuesday.

Peabody 80

Triton 67

Chalk up another one for the boys basketball Tanners, who improved to 17-2 with a win against Triton at home. Raphel Laurent did his thing – and then some – with 41 points, while his partner-in-crime Anthony Forte added 25.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lynn Tech 55

Greater Lawrence 31

The Lady Tigers just keep on pouncing, all the way to an 11-6 record after their home win against Greater Lawrence on Friday. Allison Morales kept her stellar season intact, recording 26 points, 11 steals, five rebounds, three blocks, and two assists.

Aliyah Volquez had eight points, five steals, five rebounds, and two assists, while Niya Bingham and Jaylianniez Beauchamp played “intense defense,” according to head coach Kaitlyn Wechsler.

Peabody 48

Waltham 34

The Lady Tanners jumped to 11-5 in the standings with a 48-34 victory against Waltham. Logan Lomasney – now just nine points short of 1,000 – scored 24 alongside seven boards.

Sophia Coburn added 10 points and six rebounds, while Abby Bettencourt did a little bit of everything with eight points, six assists, five rebounds, and six steals.

Winthrop 45

Swampscott 35

The Vikings conquered the Big Blue in enemy territory. Winthrop was led by its three double-digit scorers in Grace Fleuriel (12 points), Kaylee Farrell (12), and Reese Brodin (10). Lily Conway, Sophia Lindinger, Zoey Bogusz, and Poli Tsiotos added some strong minutes off the bench.

GYMNASTICS

Marblehead 131.9

Peabody 98.65

Marblehead got the job done in a gymnastics meet against the Tanners of Peabody, escaping with a 131.9-98.65 win.

For Peabody, it was a loss, but not without positives.

“Another meet with lots of personal bests for our kids. We are so continuously proud of our non-experienced gymnasts,” said Peabody coach Mackenzie Bernice.

Senior captain Kim Viera stuck the beam with a 6.2, while do-it-all co-captain Bailey Merchant secured a 6.2 on vault, 4.5 on bars, 6 on beam, and 6.6 on floor.

Molly Hagerty (personal best 8.1 on vault), Cairo Martinez (5.8 on floor; 5.2 on bars), Maddy Semper (6.35 on vault) all contributed, as did Anastasia Marckini, who “competed for her first time ever in high school gymnastics with a 6.4 on vault,” as said by Bernice.
