LYNN — The Water and Sewer Commission held a meeting Wednesday afternoon to inform the community about upcoming construction on the intersection of Bennett and Commercial Street.
The work is part of the West Lynn Sewer Separation Project, which is described as a multi-phase sewer project that spans across approximately 260 acres of the western part of the city. It also includes the installation of a stormwater pump station on McManus Field that will be connected to a reconstructed outfall pipe that goes out to Lynn Harbor.
Bennett Street Tire and Glass Manager Charlie El Hachem said while he understands that the project is necessary, he is worried that the project will negatively impact the amount of customers his business receives.
“I cannot just close down for a week, or two, or three,” El Hachem said. “We don’t work by appointment so we can’t make our schedule ahead of time… we’re not going to be doing the exact same business like we were during no construction.”
He expressed gratitude for the ability to express his reservations to city officials during Wednesday’s meeting, and that they seemed receptive to accommodating he and other business owners in the vicinity of the work being done. One of the potential solutions discussed was implementing signage at the intersection to let passersby know that the businesses remain open despite the detour.
Other construction projects currently ongoing throughout Lynn include the installation of a bike lane on the Lynnway, as well as roadwork taking place on Lynnfield Street between Wyoma Square and St. Mary’s Cemetery.
