Newly elected Lynn School Committee member Sean Reid joined Attorney James J. Carrigan on his Lynn Community TV Show, “The American Dream,” this week to discuss what the committee is working on.
The show, which airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., and Saturdays at 7 a.m. on Comcast Channel 3 and Verizon Channel 38, is “designed to give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at how public and private policy is developed,” according to Carrigan.
Reid, a Lynn native who works as district director in state Sen. Brendan Crighton’s office, was elected to his first term on the committee in November.
The conversation between Reid and Carrigan ran for just less than half an hour and began with Reid outlining the committee’s role in the city and its public school system.
“There’s three main primary functions, it’s to elect and oversee a superintendent, to approve a budget, and also to set policy,” he said. “But beyond that there’s different roles that we play as advocates both within the school department and to different levels of government to advocate for different policies in government, funding that will benefit us.”
Reid also touched on the committee’s focus on the city’s school infrastructure, noting the aging nature of its school buildings, and the diverse population of the public schools, with a number of different languages spoken by students.
Episodes can be found on the Lynn Community Television website after they air.
