SAUGUS — With fires popping up consistently at Cedar Glen Golf Course and Breakheart Reservation, Thursday’s rain was much needed in the town and all over the state. However, the slippery roads proved to be a serious driving hazard.
A majority of the crashes occurred on Route 1 and Main Street.
One of the accidents took place overnight at 2:24 a.m. Friday. It involved one car that rolled over on Route 1 South at the Main Street overpass in front of the Square One Mall.
The Police Department, Fire Department, and State Police all responded to the multiple calls flooding in about the accident. McGarvey Towing also came to take care of the totaled car.
The accident damaged multiple traffic signs, including the Main Street Saugus sign, a stop sign, and a pedestrian sign, according to the Fire Department. Reports show that the car was a rental.
The driver fled the scene on foot and headed in the direction of the mall. The State Police K-9 unit arrived at the scene, but the search for the driver was unsuccessful.
As of right now, the state will be handling the rest of the investigation.
