Nahant to vote on override Wednesday

NAHANT — Voters will decide on Wednesday if the town will adopt a $1 million Proposition 2½ operating override to fund the budgets of town departments and public schools for FY27.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Town Hall.

This election follows a 175-33 vote at the May 16 Town Meeting, which sent the override to the ballot box.

On the ballot, there will be two questions: the first, “Shall the Town of Nahant be allowed to assess an additional $1,000,000 in real estate and personal property taxes for the purpose of funding the operating budgets of the Town and Public Schools for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026?” And the second question, “Shall the Town of Nahant approve the charter amendment proposed by the 2026 Annual Town Meeting to change the posting of the Annual Town Meeting Warrant from fourteen (14) days to seven (7) days?”

If the override passes, taxes in town will increase by more than 2.5%.

“Just over 80% of the Town’s total revenues are dependent on property taxes, which by law can only increase by 2.5% per year under Proposition 2 ½,” Alison Nieto, Nahant’s town administrator, told The Item in an email. “The Town has kept its budgets in line with this limit since 2020, but the increase in operational costs and the need for additional personnel has outpaced 2.5%. The impact of a $1 million override on the median single-family homeowner in town is $604 in FY27.”

The Town’s website has a tax calculator that residents can use to determine how the override will impact them, Nieto said.

Approval of the override will allow funding of four new full-time firefighters, one full-time English language arts and math specialist, and professional development in the school department.

It will also increase the salaries of five full-time, non-union/non-contract employees to market rates.

It will also provide an increase of $0.50 per hour in part-time salaries for Council on Aging, Library, and Public Works staff, according to Nahant’s website.

The override will also allow department utility budgets to increase by 4%. It will also transfer $56,000 to the Town’s stabilization fund.

If the override passes, the town’s debt payments will increase by $48,243.

Town officials have created a webpage accessible through the town’s website, nahant.org, with more information regarding the ballot.
