Nahant reeling in the cash

NAHANT — Town Administrator Tony Barletta announced that the town has received an additional $49,669 in state funds to improve town infrastructure, such as sidewalks and roads.

The new funds are categorized as supplemental resources for fiscal year 2024, bringing Nahant’s total granted amount to more than $138,000 for FY24.

Earlier this year, Gov. Maura Healey and her administration put the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Chapter 90 program into effect, which authorized $200 million to fund infrastructure projects in municipalities across the state.

The amount was decided based on the Chapter 90 formula, which considers factors such as the number of miles public roadways account for, the number of people employed, and the total population in any given community.

Barletta said there is no specific project that the town plans to use the money for. However, he said it will be crucial in funding repairs and traffic studies suggested by the town’s recently updated five-year plan, which each year calls for more funding.

“On behalf of the Board of Selectmen and the Town of Nahant, we want to thank the governor and the state legislature for providing these additional resources to municipalities like ours,” Board of Selectmen Chairman Josh Antrim said. “These funds will be used to conduct the work laid out by the Town of Nahant’s recently updated five-year plan for roadways and sidewalk repairs.”

According to the town, it is able to access the funds immediately without specific project approval by the state. However, expenses must be eligible in accordance with Chapter 90 regulations.
