NAHANT — The Cultural Council announced it is seeking funding proposals from residents for community-oriented events, initiatives, and programs through Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Each year, the Massachusetts Cultural Council allocates funds to its 329 affiliates that account for all 351 municipalities throughout the Commonwealth. This year, The Nahant Cultural Council (NCC) has been given $6,000 to use with the goal of enriching the community. NCC Chair Peggy Curran said she was satisfied with the amount the town was awarded, as it has approximately $500 more to spend in comparison to last year through an increase and leftover funding from the previous year.

“We’ve funded a variety of events… programs for seniors, programs for students,” Curran said.

She named the town’s first-ever community photography exhibition as an example of a positive social initiative her council was the driving force behind. More than 300 images were submitted and subsequently printed by the council for free. Nine local photographers were also recognized.

Each municipality that is granted state funds is allowed to set their own criterion for what qualifies as a valid proposal, and Curran said she and her peers try to take a broad approach for the benefit of the community.

“If somebody wants to put on an event or activity, it generally has to take place in Nahant and it has to either be put on by a Nahant resident or it has to have some kind of Nahant connection,” Curran explained. “If we feel there is a benefit to the residents, we will generally fund it.”
