Martin (Marty) T. Schmidt of Rockville Centre and South Jamesport passed away on Sept. 5 at the age of 81 after a period of illness.
Martin was born on July 26, 1945, in Rockaway Beach, N.Y. Marty is survived by his wife Barbara Schmidt; son Eric Schmidt of South Jamesport; daughter Holly Redmond and son-in law Jim of Littleton, Mass.; and grandsons Jack and Luke Redmond; along with a sister Faith McDougal and brother-in-law Steve of Levittown; Carol Schmidt of Valley Stream; and mother-in-law Alberta Weisberg of Vero Beach, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. Marty was pre-deceased by his daughter Amanda and parents Frank and Ann Schmidt; brother Frank and sister Patricia.
Marty proudly served as a member of the US Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. A 50-year member of the Hewlett Bay Park Volunteer Fire Department, Marty served as an officer of the Exempt Association and maintained his commitment to community and public safety through his life.
Marty became a strong advocate for blood donation after the loss of his daughter Amanda. As a blood donor himself, Marty was a member of the New York Blood Center’s “10 Gallon Club” and continued to advocate for blood donation throughout his life.
Marty worked in the communications industry and served in various capacities at Bell Telephone, AT& T and Verizon serving in roles ranging from engineering to research. If you knew Marty in life, you knew his intensity, and he brought that same level of intensity to his three greatest passions in life: golf, ice cream and family and the order of priority remains a great topic of debate among his family!
The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes, 13805 Main Road (NY-25), Mattituck, New York 11952. Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a..m at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church, 14300 Main Road (NY-25), Mattituck, New York 11952. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jamesport Fire Department and American Cancer Society.
